Tunitas Creek
15 May 2021
I had originally planned to do this a couple of days ago as the third leg of a big loop from Woodside (Old La Honda - Pescadero - Stage Road - Hwy 1 - Tunitas Creek - Kings Mountain), but my legs were still tired from Tuesday’s Tour of San Francisco and I took a nap instead. Today’s version was a bit more manageable. It was also my last ride before loading up the gear for the long ride to Seattle (stay tuned).

I parked along Highway 1 at Martin’s Beach. Tunitas Creek Road begins just a mile or so farther south. My first stop was The Bike Hut, a great little way point for bicyclists. I didn’t need any of its offerings, but enjoyed checking it out both heading up and coming back down.
The Bike Hut - Potrero Nuevo Farm
It’s about 10 miles and 2000’ of vertical up to Skyline Boulevard, mainly through second growth redwoods (and fog). I saw less than half a dozen cars on the round trip (The Coast Highway was busier, but the shoulders were wide), but I saw plenty of other cyclists. Most were faster than me (but not all of them). The ride up was pleasant, but lots of work, particularly in the steeper middle section. The ride down was great, though I wish I’d brought full finger gloves to ward off the moist coastal chill.
When I got back to the starting point, I decided to ride down to the beach. The gate was open and I didn’t have to pay to park my bike. Martin’s Beach is an ongoing saga of coastal access and property rights (Google it). It’s also a neat little enclave of beach cabins perched on the slope above the riprap. Their geological issues will continue long after their legal battles are resolved! Next time, I’ll leave more time to explore the beach itself, but this trip I rode back up the hill and tossed the bike in the trunk for the drive back to the city.
Up here in the smoke. Good to see a breeze blowing the smoke out and great to see cooler temps. I hope @calfire is getting the support they need for #czulightningcomplex and others.
