The brand new concept album from Tunnidge, Mobius Strip, has landed on Lock In. Not only is it Tunnidge’s debut album, but it’s also the debut release of the record label Shining Tyger. What better way to begin as a label than putting out this dubstep heavyweight’s long awaited LP? It’s been a long time in the process and finally the twisted, almost holy visions of soundscapes witnessed and recorded by Tunnidge are right here for you to tune into.
The name, Mobius Strip, perfectly contains the atmosphere of the album. Not only does it sound obscure and alien, but it refers to a twisted figure of eight loop. In this concept album, the beginning and end tracks blend into each other with the same heart-beat like kick drum and haunting vocal tracks within melodies skipping alongside incredibly clean vinyl crackles. The vinyl crackle is a sort of motif throughout the album and it’s often used as a bridge across tracks.
Philosophical and religious moments are spoken to us over cacophonic backdrops of beat-less atmospheres that enhance the feeling of an approaching judgement day, or festival of the damned I wasn’t aware of until this album dropped. There’s a clear religious sentiment throughout the album, not of any religion in particular, but there seems to be references to the Pagan and Hindu faiths, as well as Rastafarianism.
The tracks are either 140, or 160 BPM, but in this case the BPMs in no way define their genres. Obviously dubstep is involved, but strung throughout the Mobius Strip is jungle, techno and steppers vibes too. Being well known for his haemorrhage inducing dubstep, this is a good view into what Tunnidge as a producer is capable of. This album plays host to tracks that stray far from the formulaic restrictions of the typical dubstep banger that you’re probably used to hearing and raises the band of art and progression in the genre, allowing more styles to bleed in and more personality and atmosphere to bleed out from the individual creating the songs, rather than the crowd moshing to them. Even though he said a long time ago in an interview on Get Darker that he was creating an album more for the home listener, it would be great to hear some of the endless progression visible in the Mobius Strip appear on the dancefloor as well.
