#3796 - Cookia sulcata - Cook's Turban 

And a more intact one someone had left next to a holiday hut in Fiordland.

AKA Cookia novaezelandiae, and sometimes regarded as a subgenus of Bolma. Known by several traditional names in te reo Māori - ngāruru, karaka, toitoi, and pūpū karikawa. Historically, Māori utilized the thick, strong shells to make durable fish hooks. The genus was named after Captain James Cook, and its wrinkled texture. Although the wrinkles are usually hidden under a thick crust of pink or white coralline algae.

It lives in the low intertidal zone on rocky coastlines, feeding on algal turf and seaweed.

The only other species in the genus, the extinct Cookia kawauensis, has been found in rocky shore, shallow marine deposits of the early Miocene.

Cat’s Eye shells and where they’re from

The “Smooth Moon Turban” snail is a simple creature common in the tidepools. These beautiful spiral pearls specifically come from the snail’s Epiphragm, a door of sorts, protecting the snail’s interior from exterior dry environments.

 My mother used to collect these types of shells when she was younger.
