turningmachine replied to your post:What do you think will happen with geopolitics?
also haven’t we been preparing for war with Iran for a while now? (although you could say not meaningfully)
We don’t have staging grounds for a ground invasion. Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan wouldn’t be keen on the idea.
We could fight a tanker war, like we did in the 1980s, or an air war, like we did against Iraq in the 1990s. Presumably we’d do it to enforce a sanctions regime, like the one we had against Iraq. At best, that’d put us back where we started, with a non-proliferation deal like the one we got in 2015, after a decade of sanctions.
I don’t know what the Iran hawks want. I hope they don’t have the damn fool idea that we could leverage air and sea power to get a better non-proliferation deal or -- god forbid -- effect regime change. And I certainly hope they don’t think we could do it unilaterally.
I’d need to know more about Iranian and American military technology than I do to know the feasibility of an air campaign against Iran, especially one that targets Iranian nuclear facilities. Can we reliably identify and eliminate them without unacceptable losses? If the answer yes, then the Iran hawks might just want an endless air war.
What the Iran hawks certainly do want is an endless pseudo-proxy war in Syria, Yemen, and Shiite Lebanon, which seems equally pointless. Why? What are they doing? Who do they think the Iranians are?
But I’ve never read any Iran hawks -- I’m repelled by the idea, which smells of pure Huntingtonian psychosis -- so I have no idea what they’re thinking. Because, really, what are they thinking?
You’re gonna have to check with someone with better ears for this sort of thing.

what’s the alternative?
debt forgiveness for the periphery and a more dovish central bank, presumably under French/Italian/Spanish leadership
