how about the relationship between seadwellers and landdwellers?

Did you know that clown paint is corrosive to seadweller skin? It's a closely guarded piece of knowledge! Some very nasty executions have been done this way.

I say this to set the tone of relations: strictly speaking the Ranking Highblood, leader of the clowns, is the highest in blood save the Empress, and the seadwellers Do Not Care for that Shit at ALL. The paint helps prevent any of them from trying to be the highblood and a seadweller both not that that's something any of them would want.

There's a real division between land and sea, the sea having it's own courts and the land being definitely separate and lower. It's not going to affect the life of anyone who isn't jade, Navy or higher, a clown, or Mindfang, though. Warmerbloods are also disdained by the high land dwellers so who is doing the oppressing is less important save for some teals who've really bought into the ideals of prestige (Philosophy tube' S video on the monarchy gives a good run down of that, that sense of belonging and commonality with someone without sharing your best interests)

Jades just Have respect. They do a hard job and they are vital for reproduction and theirs is a rare caste. They don't OUTRANK sea dwellers but they rarely MEET seadwellers.

A navyblooded cavalleader declared war on the sea once, before space perforce united all trolls, but like badly. Had the cavalreapers charge in. Some drowned. Seadwellers feeling obnoxious will bring it up.

((Grand doesn’t know this, but about when the Fleet and space empire began in earnest was when the stipend began, and that worked out essentially what was necessary on average for a troll’s growth and development. This would be provided to each and every troll in the empire, because even the lowest troll needed to be an Exemplar compared to the average alien. 

So essentially for kids, trolls are provided 80 or so percent of their stipend in goods, and 15 percent of it in cash. This does not add up to 100%, you point out. Correct! I agree heartily. These numbers are for Red and Bronze trolls only. 

Yellowbloods got more food, and probably more computer equipment, in their goods portion, and are the first caste to receive 100% of what was predicted as their average. Bronze and Rust are meant to “make it work” and scrounge around for that last 5 percent, or just, as your boy astutely works out, grow up small and sickly. 

Water is provided free of charge but in districts below green tends to be heavily chlorinated because “lowbloods are gross and filthy and need our help to be Examples to the Aliens.” 

Jade is the first caste to receive more than that worked-out figure. The castes essentially run the full gamut to “barely enough” to “We’re going to give the Fuchsia everything they want.” 

Post Signless, the Jewellery consumption laws demanded everyone have a certain amount of jewellery as a form of Tax? And that came out of that 15% for Bronzes and Rusts. Also, schoolfeeding became far less practical and useful and far more propaganda-y. Grand didn’t know this until relatively recently.

So essentially: people have a surface level of thought where things change all the time. It’s where you take in what’s going on, and have the thoughts you interpret as thoughts, like, did I leave the oven on, I like that hat, whatever. Even novice clowns can get in here because it’s not something that’s hidden? It’s like, the working pages of an exam. 

A little further in, you have the bit I’d reckon I’d call your inner thoughts? You’re not responding to stimuli directly, you are constructing a framework within which you respond to things. You pick up deeper opinions from the outer layer and braid them in here if you want to keep them, or sometimes without thinking. For instance: I like that hat, but I’ve noticed she only wears them when she’s feeling self conscious, I should make a joke about something. This is as far as Grand is happy to go? Because this is where people themselves are as deep as they’re likely to go. The consciousness, I guess, of your opinions. Memories or traumas or whatever might bubble up from even deeper, but they’re not going to stick around, they just further inform the framework that exists, but you’re not aware of 100% of the time. 

Deeper is the memories that make you who you are, a collection of feelings and tangles of patters so emeshed in who you are that you can’t really undo them. To give a personal example, I don’t like behaviours that leave others feeling belittled and I’ve stepped in on what others call ‘teasing’ or ‘harmless hazing’ before. That shit’s not going anywhere. It’s not something I might change my mind about when presented with new information, for better or worse. the memories behind this rarely come to the fore, but they’re here and they’re important. 

Deepest down is the shape of who you are, and that’s something that slowly spreads outwards. You are a person, and that is important, and your nature and the outside bits, that which is nurtured, expand out, I guess. You might grow to be more like a person you admire, without ever realising it, you might be stifled by propaganda, whatever. 

What Grand hates is anyone who attempts to like, mould people. Shape them like topiary by cutting through the mess of thoughts and bias and opinion at the second layer, give them new traumas at level three or even 4, and change the pattern of their growth artifically and too fast into exactly what they want it. Even if you only reinforce the surface thoughts you like, again and again, ever after, you will eventually see that sift down into the core of who a troll is.

how would you describe pan layers and how deep is too deep? and why
