It’s been a while since we last got out of town, so yesterday we took a day trip up to the Verde Valley, where we visited Montezuma’s Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments. It was a beautiful, warm, cloudless day, and while spring was in the air there was still a lot of greenery waiting to wake up. The bare bones of sycamore trees at the castle were especially striking, framing the Sinagua ruins in ways I haven’t worked with before. There were also a large number of other tourists about, which can be a double edged sword. On the one hand, the extra people drew in interesting vendors and presentations on the living culture of the site, from macaw keeping to flint knapping. On the other, it was challenging to avoid taking pictures full of people, especially at Tuzigoot, or taking the same shots as everyone else. But in all it was a wonderful trip, one I think we’ll take again when summer is in full swing.
