The Twitter Effect: How #Skywire Captured A Country's Attention
By @RossSheingold, Chief Strategy Officer @247LS
If you checked Twitter last night at around 9pm EDT, your timeline was likely inundated with hysterical tweets about live TV coverage of Nik Wallenda walking over The Grand Canyon on a wire. It turned out to be a case study in how Twitter drives TV viewership and enables shared cultural experiences. Score one for the Discovery Channel!
Before opening the Twitter app on my iPhone, I was completely disconnected from the event. For the hour after, my eyes were glued to the Discovery Channel. And I wasn't the only one. From 9-10pm EDT #SkyWire tweets were flying at a torrid pace - 442,047 tweets using that hashtag, to be exact. During the same time period, 32,835 tweets were sent using the term "Skywire" (without the hashtag).
Those numbers alone are staggering, but the disparity between hashtag usage and general term usage is notable as well. In an extremely savvy move, The Discovery Channel placed the #Skywire hashtag and Twitter logo prominently on the upper-right quadrant of the screen. It was one of the most prominent hashtags I've ever seen ghosted on a live TV event and it paid off.
To put these numbers in context, let's take a look at another live TV event that typically captures the attention of Americans - NBA Finals game 7. From 8pm - 4am EDT last Thursday night, 244k tweets were sent using the hashtag #NBAFinals while only 156k were sent using the term "NBA Finals."
Compared to the Skywire event, there wasn't nearly as wide of a gap between hashtag usage and no hashtag usage because ABC/ESPN decided NOT to ghost a hashtag on the screen for the NBA Finals
Obviously, a once in a lifetime event (a dude walking on a wire over The Grand Canyon) will always activate more tweeting than a "run of the mill" NBA Finals Game 7.
However, by prominently featuring a hashtag, Discovery centralized the conversation and provided a call to action for people to Tweet about it. Once word of great content like that was pumped into the Twitter ecosystem, it spread virally. I'm sure I wasn't the only casual Sunday night Twitter checker who was converted into an obsessed #Skywire viewer! Tweet me @RossSheingold if you were in the same boat.
