Far Away For Far Too Long | Vic + Jett
Clutching onto the envelope in her hands like it was a lifeline, Vic drew in a deep breath, sitting down at the small desk in the corner of her room as she pulled out the letter she hadn’t been able to bring herself to read since she had received it. She had read it once and then hidden it in the bottom of one of her drawers, tucked away safely so that she wouldn’t be tempted to read it again and feel the pain a second time around. With shaky hands, she pulled the letter out of it’s envelope and unfolded it, letting her eyes skim over the words Jett had written to her. The first time she had read it, she had been in too much pain to really take in what it had said, to memorise every word like she should have. Now, however, she had come to terms with Jett leaving. Well, the drugs had helped her come to terms with it. So she was almost certain that reading it a second time wouldn’t be that bad at all.
Huffing out a breath, her brows knitted together and she chewed her lip in concentration as she let her fingertip trail over the words. He had written everything in this letter. Every tiny detail and yet she couldn’t find anything in between the lines. It was unlike him to not leave some sort of secret message in there. She knew him too well to know that this wasn’t just a regular letter. It was something more but she just couldn’t figure out what.
Despite everything, a tiny smile played on her lips as she read the letter and read everything he had written about some of his favourite memories with her. As she read each one, the memory played in her mind like it had happened only yesterday even though a few of those memories had been years ago. She still remember the exact dates, of course. How could she not? They had stuck in her mind, etched their forever so she wouldn’t ever forget them. Smiling again, Vic sat back in her chair, staring down at the letter in concentration again. After a few seconds, she shot forward, grabbing a pen and a pad of post-it notes and writing down the dates of each memory he had listed until she had a list of numbers scribbled onto the tiny bit of paper.
It didn’t take long for it to sink in. A sharp breath passed her lips as she reached for her phone, shakily typing the digits into the keypad, her thumb hovering over the call button hesitantly. Maybe she was wrong about this, but it was still worth a try. As scared as she was about talking to Jett again, especially after realising that she had listened to his voicemail too late, she couldn’t deny that his voice was her favourite drug. As scared as she was, Vic’s heart raced at the mere possibility of talking to him, even just for a moment. Before she could talk herself out of it, she pressed her thumb down on the call button and held her phone to her ear, closing her eyes while it rang. What if it wasn’t him? What if he hung up on her and soon as he realised who was calling him? Shaking the thoughts out of her head, Vic tried to keep her breaths calm while she waited for an answer.
