"...When Pride goeth before a Gibbs — that would be Dwayne Pride, future hero of NCIS: New Orleans, and the iconic Leroy Jethro Gibbs — the macho vibe is not pretty once the not-yet-special agents are forced together on their first joint case.

As a precursor to New Orleans star Scott Bakula, Olympian-turned-actor Shea Buckner brings swagger as the younger Pride, whose bad blood with fellow probie Gibbs (Austin Stowell) dates back 11 years to an encounter in New Orleans involving Gibbs’ dad (Robert Taylor).

When Pride is brought in from the Panama NIS office to help infiltrate a smuggling ring that led to a lieutenant’s death, Gibbs’s nose is out of joint even before they trade blows.

“Lot of weird energy here,” observes Vera (Diany Rodriguez), who’s responsible for bringing the NIS units together.

This episode also represents the formation of the so-called “Fed Five,” which includes Gibbs, Pride, Gibbs’ boss Franks (Kyle Schmid), Pride’s boss Dan McLane (Mark Deklin), and L.A.-based auditor Felix Betts (Adam Kulbersh)..."

The cadets undergo a trial by fire during a joint Academy training exercise in a ship graveyard that quickly escalates into a life-or-death crisis. As a hostage situation unfolds involving a dangerous new species of human-alien hybrids, Captain Ake (Holly Hunter) takes desperate measures, including contacting “the enemy of our enemy” — who’s basically just another enemy, also her greatest nemesis.

STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY - JANUARY 15, 2026 - TV INSIDER: WORTH WATCHING

“Why does everything have to be a full-on lesson in this place?” whines one of the literal space cadets in the latest Star Trek spinoff. Which (duh) is set at Starfleet Academy, meaning life lessons are always on the syllabus. Holly Hunter is having a merry time as the free-spirited 400-year-old Chancellor/Captain, Nahla Ake, and her scenes opposite fellow scenery-chewer Paul Giamatti (as her space-pirate nemesis) are a treat.

Familiarity with Star Trek: Discovery is a plus, because this series takes place in the 32nd century, 100 years after the “Burn” that devastated the galaxy, and the new class of recruits are the Academy’s first in more than a century.

Among them: a peace-loving Klingon, a holographic emissary from a photonic alien race, and a reforming rebel who shares a tangled past with Ake. Familiar faces include Star Trek: Voyager‘s hologram Doctor (Robert Picardo) and sardonic Discovery engineer Jett Reno (Tig Notaro). So this is how the Trek franchise marks its 60th anniversary: by going younger. Launches with two episodes.

NCIS: ORIGINS - OCTOBER 28, 2025 - TV INSIDER - WORTH WATCHING: YOUNG DUCKY VISITS TONIGHT

"...Adam Campbell returns as the younger version of the franchise’s beloved medical examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard, immortalized by the late David McCallum, whose music is heard throughout the special episode. Ducky arrives to evaluate whether Pendleton could use an in-house medical examiner, much to the delight of probie Gibbs (Austin Stowell), who met him several years earlier and whom Ducky fondly refers to by his middle name of Jethro, “a name for a leader of men.”

Team leader Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) isn’t nearly as welcoming, suspecting the good doc has come from D.C. with the goal of shutting down the Pendleton operation. But Ducky, as usual, proves his worth when he assists on the case of the murdered wife of a Navy lieutenant commander.
