As we are approaching frostbite weather, I thought it would be the perfect time to share some anti frostbite tips! (A little late, but it's important)
This entire post is /srs, please take care of yourselves!
Do not wear cotton!!!! It retains fluids very easily, and being wet is your mortal enemy in could weather. "Cotton is rotten" is a common saying among skiers and it is very much so true.
Fleece is your best friend. It's a great insulator
Get gloves, not mittens. Mittens isolate your fingers, meaning it's harder to trap heat. Even better, get gloves that have built in finger seams within the hand pocket.
Glove and boot warmers are a must. Bring multiple with you and change them out as needed.
Wear layers underneath your jacket. I wear underclothes, a long sleeve, a short sleeve, and a pullover underneath my jacket, sometimes a vest over my pullover. It seems excessive, but when it hurts -20 Fahrenheit, you'll be grateful.
Boots that won't let your toes freeze are necessary. I recommend leather/hide moccasins with animal fur lining. My feet have never gotten cold wearing mine. /Srs
if you get frostbite symptoms
You lose feeling in a part of your body
Your skin gets pink where it's cold
Your skin turns mildly purple
your skin turns white or deep purple
Your skin turns hot after it gets cold
You no longer feel cold where you previously did
If you do get frostbite symptoms, treat them ASAP!!!
take off all wet/damp clothing
Run your hands/toes under warm water, NOT hot. Since you can't feel, you could accidentally scald your skin.
Take a warm, again NOT HOT, shower if you can't heat yourself up quick enough.
Get your warmest clothes on, blankets, and a heater and hunker down until all the cold is gone
it's going to excruciating to heat up your body where frostbite symptoms occur, but STICK WITH IT!!!
Losing a finger, toe, or a section of skin is not with it to avoid the pain of reheating your skin.
If your skin turns black, that part of your body is probably dead. If your skin dies, GO TO THE ER /Srs
You will likely have to get the necrotic skin surgically removed. Which is not fun.
