Rick and His demons

I had to see Rick being called "bad father" by Negan a few hours after burying his son. And during this sequence, I wondered why Rick doesn't end the conversation?

Rick Grimes always carries his demons. His only goal is to protect his family, and he allow himself to be overcome by guilt when he can not do it even when it's not his fault.

It is the fear of failing to protect his family and especially his children that eats him every time. It is the thread of this character over the seasons:

- Shane told him he didn't have the ability to protect his family.

- Lori doubted his decisions to protect his people.

- The governor used his fears to incite him to deliver Michonne using Lori's death and his fear of not being able to protect his children.

- Even his mind doubted his abilities by asking him (with the voices of all his fellow dead) why he wasn't able to save his wife.

- And it's Negan's turn now.

Why did Rick not end the conversation? In fact, Rick was torturing himself by listening to Negan.

I mean he could have stopped the communication much sooner after telling Negan that Carl was dead and that he was going to kill him! Instead, he continued to listen to Negan telling him that he was a bad father and that Carl dead because of him ...

He didn't contradict him at any moment, he just listened to him, he's just taking the blows.

He was punishing himself, listening to the only person who can torture him as violently as his mind. Hear someone else (his worst enemy) say out loud what his mind is screaming at him.

Is that why he distances himself from Michonne twice (in Alexandria and in the van)? Certainly, she is his person, the only one who will not judge him, the person who can persuade him that it is not his fault. But he is not ready to let go of his guilt and for now, he is probably afraid she'd talk him out of it, she is the only one who could.

Last week a lot of people were complaining/mad about the Richonne interaction. The scene that hit me harder was in 8x10. In Alexandria. there’s a moment he just walked right past her, didn’t even acknowledge her, really.😭 And while I get why some people would be mad about those scenes, I'm not. Sure, I’d rather Rick would let her in (like this week) but it makes complete sense?! Part1/2

Dude just lost his son –who was really his whole or at least main reason of being. Ever since he woke up in that hopsital, it’s been about Carl for Rick. In a way it even makes more sense that being closed off would be his first reaction., no? Part 2/2

Yeah, I agree. And I do remember being a bit taken aback by the way he walked past her in 8x10, but it’d literally just happened, so I got it. Plus, it helped when he reached out to Michonne when they were at the van, and he tried to help her save that gazebo because she wanted to, when Lord knows he wasn’t in the mood. Like you said, he tends to emotionally shut down in these moments. Remember he ignored Carl and his newborn baby for fake telephone calls for like a full day after Lori died, lol. So really, he’s doing better than I thought he would be.
