From Gallifrey to Trenzalore, part 4

I really didn't know. I wasn't sure. You lose sight sometimes. Thank you! I am not a good man! I am not a bad man. I am not a hero. And I'm definitely not a president. And no, I'm not an officer. Do you know what I am? I am an idiot, with a box and a screwdriver. Just passing through, helping out, learning. I don't need an army. I never have, because I've got them. Always them.

The last series of Doctor Who explored many interesting themes and topics. As for the poetic ones, we were once again reminded of the importance of stories, we found out that fear is nothing to be afraid of, we saw the beauty of the universe, we witnessed wonders. But we also experienced the harshness of the universe, witnessed dead people rising from their graves, betrayal, the inverted idea of heaven, when the afterlife turned out to not be a paradise but hell. And soldiers were involved in many of those incredible stories that series 8 had to offer. Moreover, we saw the Doctor’s soul. We saw its beauty, its infinity, we even saw its hatred. Above all else, we saw his hatred towards those soldiers.

But many people have wondered — where did it suddenly come from? Where lies the origin of this fierce hatred, not only towards the guns, bombs and fighting, but also towards the people, who, whatever the reason, must make war. Looking back, it seems to be nothing new. A man who never would, a coward, any day. Soldiers and warriors were not his favourite kind of people, but he never despised them so much and so openly. He was able to talk to professor Palmer in Hide and understand him even though he was a soldier himself. Why couldn’t he talk to Danny like that? What was different this time? What happened?

To find the true cause of this hatred, we have to come back to Christmas. To Trenzalore. Just imagine this. Last several hundred years of your life, spent fighting a war without an end, just to keep everyone save. That would be difficult for anyone, even for one (big bad) small Time Lord. Of course he eventually got sick of it. One Doctor against thousands of armies. No wonder it affected his reputation. Trenzalore, indeed, influenced him greatly. It was just too much for an old man.

Yes, Journey was a soldier, protecting the universe from the Doctor’s oldest enemies — the Daleks. Yes, Danny was a soldier, but who was there to blame? Perhaps it was the Doctor’s memory that got scrambled. The Doctor was looking at all of them as if he was better than them, as if he was different. But he was just being hypocritical.

During the last season, he kept asking a question — whether he was a good man. But why was he so sceptical and curious about it? Again — because of Trenzalore. Those events made him doubt who he really was. The Doctor, who wasn’t sure of his doings after the Time War, was back.

And more than ever before, this series reflected how the Doctor sees himself, how others mirror his own mind and deeds. As Saibra said, trusting somebody who looks at you out of your own eyes is not easy. And the Doctor was staring into his own eyes more often than he would like.

Looking at it from this angle, it wasn’t hatred towards the soldiers in general, it was hatred only towards one of them. Himself. Although he denied it several times, he was one of them. However, sometimes we have no other choices but bad ones. Still, the choice has to be made. Even if that choice means to fight in an endless war to keep everybody safe. The Doctor made this choice — stayed for Christmas, sacrified his adventures to keep the whole universe at peace. Of course, he had to deal with the consequences of his doings. However, it doesn’t excuse him treating others as he kept treating himself.

This was a brilliant theme to explore at that very moment. It made perfect sense. Honestly, it would be unnatural and ill-conceived, if the Doctor’s attitude towards the soldiers and war wouldn’t change.

Series 8 showed us the Doctor’s long journey. From a little boy from Gallifrey, who didn’t want to join the army, to a great warrior, a survivor of the siege of Trenzalore, weary of the neverending fighting. The Doctor is a soldier, an officer. But he tries not to be and that’s probably the point.

PS: And it seems that exploring this theme is still not quite over yet, I’m more than curious what series 9 will bring.

Jesteś Ukrainką, ale Twój polski jest imponujący! Ile już studiujesz w naszym kraju i czy coś dalej sprawia Ci kłopoty z naszym językiem?

Dziękuję! :) Studiuję w Polsce 2 lata. Na początku było mi bardzo ciężko, miałam problem z językiem. Ale wszyscy byli dla mnie mili i bardzo chętnie we wszystkim mi pomagali :) 

Mam bardzo słabą pamięć, zapominam słów :DD
