Bella Swan in Crossovers

So, I've been thinking about why Twilight crossovers are popular, particularly those in which Bella is the main character and is paired off with a character from the other fandom.

It isn't about Twilight being a great book and/or movie. It's about following a character through four books and watching the people around her bully her into thinking and feeling the way they wanted her to. And to get no closure beyond the knowledge that she was right. To watch her immediately forgive everyone, due in part, I suspect, to her fear of them alienating her again.

In Twilight, Bella is trapped. Crossovers give her the opportunity to not only escape the constraints of being a human among nearly unstoppable vampires, but allows her the space to grow.

We pair Bella with characters like Dean Winchester and Damon Salvatore not because they're the same, or were written with the same level of skill, but because Bella deserves someone better, to become someone better.

Dean and Damon aren't what she deserves. They're what she needs. They're the kind of characters that can push her away from the "whiny" and broken girl she was in Forks. Being around them gives her the chance to become the girl she could have been if she wasn't bearing the weight of her love for Edward.

As for Dean and Damon, they need someone who will love them unconditionally. And if there's one thing Bella can do, it's love unconditionally. She can help Dean see the gray between good and evil, and she can help Damon be more of the man he was before Katherine broke him.
