As you can probably guess, 9S’s skill at concealing his true emotions extends to tears. He doesn’t often cry, and isn’t one to let it show on his face much if it’s a small thing. If something bothers him and it isn’t intense, it tends to come out as irritation… but this applies to things he’s torn up about to his core as well. He’s far more likely to blow up in anger because he’s afraid to let his vulnerabilities show. He’s far more likely to yell than cry.
In the end, 9S cries when he is relieved, when he has been bottling things up for too long. If you can get through to him enough for him to trust you with the ugly parts of himself he tends to stow away, then he would no doubt cry for letting them out. He can also cry when unexpectedly shown affection, especially affection from someone he loves: it’s something he desperately wants, but also something he feels intensely that he doesn’t deserve.
Otherwise, the only thing that makes him really reach that point is loss, and separation. If parting from a loved one, if doing so forever, 9S will cry. To him, the thought of being alone – of being apart – is just unbearable.
