twinkdancy reblogged your photoset “And what do you want for Christmas?”
#im gunna have a fit because will has a hole in his sweater HELPME#cannibal bbs
Of course there's a hole, it is also oversized. Are you having feels now? Feels about little Will's hand-me-down christmas gifs? About his dad scolding him for wanting something fun as a present, when they don't need toys to live? Having canned ravioli for christmas dinner but in the end giving Will a small wooden handmade set of boat and sailor.

well it’s extremely presumptive to think that...
I had a feeling this had the potential to become a "not all fandom" kind of conversation. I'll be brief, since I've obviously angered you.
Of course, some fans write BDSM from the point of view of living the lifestyle, which, yes, is not all just about sex. However, I tend to think this is the minority of fans, and as I said in my footnote, the subject has to be parsed somewhere. Sex is an unignorable motivating factor for most and it's the commonality that runs through everything. So that's where we are.
Additionally, as you and I both said, fan use of BDSM is not really about accurately representing it as a lifestyle, and to ignore the fact that things like A/B/O are both pervasive in Hannibal fandom and have very specific genre conventions which have little to do with BDSM, besides the fact that there is generally one dominant and one submissive partner, is to ignore a big part of what I'm talking about. Even if someone lives a BDSM lifestyle and knows it inside and out, if they write A/B/O, they're going to be writing to certain genre conventions that deviate from BDSM. And that's just one example.
You seem to think I'm talking about BDSM, and then making mistakes about it and saying that it can't be applied to an understanding of Hannibal. I'm not saying that. I'm talking about something that shares a few basic similarities to BDSM and perhaps draws inspiration from there.
If you want to view Hannibal through a critical lens of BDSM, it's certainly possible to do so, just as there exists the fairy tale lens view of Hannibal and the Christian lens view of Hannibal or any number of other things. As long as it can be thoroughly supported with the text, it's a valid reading. I might even agree with it. There's one person I can think of specifically on here who could do it well, I think, and I would probably agree with every word. Perhaps you could too, I don't know.
Even if someone views Hannibal through the lens of it being an old-school fairy tale, though, that does not make the characters literally fairies on the show. That would be the same mistake that I'm describing people making in regards to fanfic. The show is not presenting a BDSM lifestyle in a literal way.
Not every reading of a text/show/etc. is equal to every other reading. Every opinion is not equal. Some are better supported than others.
Furthermore, text and subtext is a hand-in-hand kind of conversation. This is a discussion I've had before, so I'm not going to repeat it all. Suffice it to say, subtext must be understood through the context of text. That is the only way to approach it. It is not valid to say the show is more subtext than text and then allow perceived subtext to dictate understanding of text. It doesn't work that way. Text controls.
Transformative works are transformative. They change things, sometimes fundamentally. That includes Bryan Fuller's work. The job of meta and the job of fanfic are two different jobs. I do not think my job is intrinsically superior to the job of the fic writer, or I would have to consider Bryan Fuller's work inferior to my own. I don't. However, I also don't look to Bryan Fuller's characters to understand Thomas Harris's. And if Bryan Fuller used some of the things he's done on his show to explain something that happened in Harris's novels, he would be making a mistake too. It's as simple as that.
I definitely think it's possible for people to partition their minds so that they can do fic and do meta both well. I know quite a few people on here who do. (Not all fans!) However, my observation is that a large portion of people aren't particularly good at this, and they allow what they've done in their fic to affect their canon understandings in a way that sends them astray.
My apologizes for making you feel insulted.
im not going to be okay until bb!will finds his bunny ; A ;
luckily for him, bb!will has hannibal to help him with all his challenges ♡
