is fine line: one night only even a show? is fine line: one night only an emotion? is it a place? we dont know !
Wtf??
Idina Menzel and her fans have every right to feel insulted and defensive about her name being completely unknown to a celebrity whose job it was to introduce her.
The public making fun of John Travolta and every single person including Idina Menzel and her fans should indeed understand and sympathize with the difficulties of dyslexia.
It doesn't change the fact that it is insulting as HELL to go out on stage to introduce someone and not bother to learn their name (including how they pronounce it even if it's a common name) before stepping out on that stage.
It's incredibly arrogant, self-important, aggressively implying that the person you're introducing is not important enough to be known, and therefore inexcusably insulting.
Idina Menzel was hurt by this, and it wasn't the fact that someone had difficulty reading her name, it was the fact that he HAD to READ her name instead of just KNOWING IT or at least pretending he knew it by memorizing it.
To step out on a stage to introduce someone without having bothered to learn their name first, and rely only on reading a teleprompter to tell you who this unknown unimportant person even is, can only be excused if you were somehow picked up out of your seat and asked to do this introduction at the very last minute, unexpectedly.
A person giving an introduction always asks how the person they're introducing pronounces their name.
A person's name is really important, and they deserve to have you find out how you prefer to have it pronounced, let alone what it even is, before introducing you to millions of viewers.
If someone gets up there and reads out "introducing the inimitable, truly talented, John Travolta" and pronounces his name Tray-vah-lta which is exactly how it's spelled but not how he prefers for it to be pronounced, that's insulting, and implying that you've never heard his name before and that his name is not important for anyone to know.
The public could be a lot more gracious about the mistake, allowing for the fact that she has an unusual name and the fact that a live award show stage is an intimidating place, and even a seasoned, experienced entertainer of the calibre and importance of John Travolta can simply get tripped up sometimes.
But come on. At the heart of this mistake was someone who must understand that it's arrogant to figure you'll just wing it on stage with the name of the person you're introducing without being sure you know the right pronunciation of their name.
Even a celebrity simply looking like they're pausing to read the name rather than just knowing the name of the person they're introducing is incredibly insulting. If you have the honor of introducing someone, you really have to use all of your acting skills to make it convincing to everyone watching that you of course know this person. Otherwise someone who DOES know who this person is should have been given the honor of that introduction.
It's a PERSON you're introducing, and this is the only time their name will be mentioned on the show, and you know it's the first time this person will be introduced to so many new people on this huge broadcast. It's important enough for you to honor the importance of that and make sure you have that person's name solidly memorized to make it look like you know who the hell they are.
People are voicing their displeasure about it, in order to defend Idina and the fact that someone introduced her on stage without knowing who the heck she is and without bothering to find out how she pronounces her name, let alone what it even is, prior to getting up on stage to just read it off a teleprompter, as if she is a nobody.
