Two Came Back (1997) Jonathan Brandis & Melissa Joan Hart
Two Came Back (1997)
Date watched: 13 January 2019
Continuing in the vein of watching made-for-TV movies from the 90s, we have Two Came Back, based on a true story of a real thing that happened, and "starring" Melissa Joan Hart and the late Jonathan Brandis.
I was attracted to this for a few reasons:
The title.
The cast.
Ill-fated sea voyage.
The title.
Plot:
Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Jonathan Brandis from Seaquest DSV (fuck I miss the 90s) are two experienced sailors, despite looking like they're about 15.
They get roped in to go on this boat trip, sailing a yacht from somewhere in California to… Seattle? I think?
Anyway, because they end up in a storm, and because the captain of the yacht is a total dingus, he can't plot their location, so they don't know where they are, and then the boat sinks. They all end up in an inflatable dinghy, ADRIFT AT SEA but also not too far from the California coast.
Kitty Montgomery from Dharma & Greg plays Sabrina's mother, and she's the one who badgers the Coast Guard into raising the alarm, but in the days that pass the three other characters who aren't Sabrina or Jonathan Brandis all die due to various seawater-drinking mishaps and gangrene.
It's your basic "lost at sea" survival story but the stakes aren't super high because they're really not that far from the coast, because they were following it up to Seattle, and also the title totally gives away that two of them survive, so…
It's certainly not the worst made-for-TV movie I've ever seen, so I will give it that. It's not terrible.
