The misconceptions and misinformation are plentiful. For one, no white man had anything to do with black history month coming about. Carter nor Jesse are white men, nor did they ever attempt to pass as them. In 1915, Carter and Jesse founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, or the ASALH). The organization would promote studying black history as a discipline and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans and other peoples of African descent. February 7, 1926 Negro History Week started. February was chosen to coincide with Frederick Douglass birthday, not because it was the shortest month of the year. Negro/black history week, which Woodson wanted to extend from a week to a month to year round, it wasn't started to just highlight black people in America. Carter and Moorland looked at black people as a global people. Hence Jesse's large private library on blacks in Africa and in the United States being the foundation for a proposed Negro-Americana Museum and Library at Howard University. This collection formed the foundation of the Moorland–Spingarn Research Center, which is still around. I've seen some claim that BHM was started just with black people in America in mind.
