REFLECTIVE BP (2) ORGAN DONATION EVENT
Brief; Create a campaign that encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to discuss the subject of organ donation with their friends and family so that their choice to donate is known should the worst happen.
This was an event held In Manchester where students from all around the county could get together to collaborate on a one day brief.
After the morning briefing, everyone were placed in groups depending on the colour of lanyard and animal name which was given at the start, (my group were the pink horse) meaning 5 people for each group. Within the groups there would be Graphic designers, marketing, Illustrators etc so a good range of knowledge.
After a quick introduction it was time to get going on the task. Creating ideas by brainstorming then talking through our ideas with each other, we managed to pinpoint one strong idea and began expanding on this.
Our strong point of discussion was aimed around the term ‘parents’. This was due to answering the brief and thinking about what it wants and we picked up on the key words ‘friends and family’. Centralising this comes the word ‘parents’.
Parents come at all ages, from young parents right up to Grandparents and even Great Grandparents. With the idea of discussion between friends and family, we thought that most discussions would start at home with the parents at some point. Especially when it is a sensitive topic relating to other family members which this is.
To have such conversations, in order to help perhaps a child or teenager to understand the meanings or process of organ donation, the parent would also need to be clear on the subject too. This is where I thought about the cycle of educating all ages and that the topic would not be too difficult to talk about.
Within the group, we thought about how the conversation could arise. The way that we all agreed was a suggestion of ‘the talk’. Making it uplifting and adding humour to make this work, we pushed on the idea of how parents would normally approach a teen with ‘the talk’ relating to the talk concerning ‘the birds and the bees’. So we thought about, “Have you had ‘the talk’” in relation to the talk of organ donation.
Once this was agreed, we had to think about how we would market this idea and what it would look like as a visual. So, a gif idea then turned into a short video which I demonstrated with a simple storyboard. The video would be played on TV, channel and time of day was later discussed for this, a radio advertisement, time of day discussed, social media such as Instagram, twitter etc to target all ages and teens to encourage them to talk to friends not only family, and we thought of a website where parents could visit to get clued up on the subject and find ways to start the conversation.
Our ideas were presented to our mentors and judges on two separate occasions which gave them chance to give us feedback to help us develop further. As a group we managed our time very well and met all of our deadlines with time to spare.
Feeling confident that our hard work and humorous ideas would be good enough to meet the brief, it was announced that our group along with 4 other groups had made it through to the semi-finals. This gave us a final 20 minutes to gather our thoughts and arrange one final presentation to everyone who attended the event. (200+) Quite nerve racking to say the least but as we come this far, it was time to give it that last nudge to win.
For this final stage and having a strict 5 minutes per group to present, our game plan changed again at the last moment meaning that some of the paper work was going to be ditched and ‘the talk’ was going to be acted out. This would add humour and capture the audience and make it memorable. Although I agreed that this was a really good idea, I felt that my part in this presentation was now being a little pushed aside and I was struggling a little to give it my all after such a long day. My thoughts were making sure that all the relevant information was explained and the acting went well then that was what mattered at the end.
I don’t drink... but I had a drink after this!
It was a great experience to work with others in this way and knowing what I know from it now I will do it again if the opportunity came my way.
It was time for the final announcement.... And our group came 2nd! wow we were thrilled. 😁
We went away with a silver medal and a t-shirt along with lots of very useful information to help towards getting a good career and advise on portfolios.
