Unique Magic / Signature Spell Compilation: Silver Vanrouge

※Disclaimer: According to idia the dreamworlds of Book 7 aren't technically "dreams" at all, but as they are our only on-screen examples of how Silver's UM works that is the information that has been gathered below, together with explanations from Silver himself. How Silver's UM functions in proper dreams might be similar or might be different to how we see things work in Book 7.

Silver explains that his unique magic Meet in a Dream (hidden meaning: Let’s Have the Same Dream) lets him cross from one dream to another, but he doesn’t fully understand how dreams work or even how his own magic functions.

He says, “it’s a very intuition-based spell…” and he cannot target a specific person’s dream, or pull other people into his own dream (Ortho assures him that it is an incredible ability).

The first time we see Silver use his unique magic is in Book 7 when he rescues the prefect and Grim from the darkness of a dream after Malleus has put the island to sleep.

They temporarily appear in a pink-cloud location that Silver calls a “dreamway” and says that, if they become separated there, he is not sure if he would be able to ever find them again.

He explains that he is able to cross between different people’s dreams, but it is not the same as entering someone’s mind and it doesn’t allow him to choose whose dream he goes into. He is more likely to go into the dream of a person he has a strong tie with.

Silver comments on having met Mickey once upon a dream despite how he can normally only enter the dreams of people he has some sort of association with, and how it is “doubly curious” that Mickey remembers their past encounter.

Silver is able to identify the owner of a dream by a special, bird-shaped light that will accompany them, but the light is not infallible, incorrectly identifying one of Cater’s clones as the owner of Cater’s dream.

Silver: “I guess my signature spell recognizes magically created clones as the dreamer too.”

Silver describes dreams as “mental scenery” and “Like a world of imagination made from memories and wishes,” and as one never knows what someone is going to get from a dream beforehand he doubts he would find things like test questions if he were to enter a teacher’s dream.

It seems that the “mental scenery” of dreams are not limitless, with Silver explaining that they are unstable mental worlds constructed by the dreamer, and, “When you go off too far from the dreamer, you tend to hit either dead ends or places covered in darkness.” 

But it seems that Lilia’s dream was more expansive than Silver had anticipated: when Sebek insists on staying behind with Baul in Lilia’s dream Silver says that he has no idea what will happen if Sebek gets any farther away from Lilia, but there do not seem to be any negative consequences to Sebek staying behind.

Silver seems familiar with the darkness that constantly pursues them throughout Malleus’ dreamscapes: Right after he rescues the prefect he says that he has already had many encounters with it. He says that the darkness will appear in people’s dreams and pull them into a deeper slumber, but it is maybe unclear if this is unique to Malleus’ dreamscapes or something that always exists in dreams.

Silver says he often forgets what happens in the dreams he visits when he wakes up and that it hasn’t been the most helpful spell thus far. He can only use it when he is asleep and is aware that he is in a dream.

The conditions for summoning darkness seem to be fairly flexible, with a happy Sebek unintentionally summoning it when he decides to stay behind in Lilia’s dream forever, Silver’s emotional turmoil summoning it when he realizes the truth of his lineage, and the darkness other times just appearing of its own accord. Sebek seems to suspect that it is being controlled by Malleus, but this is unconfirmed (“No, there’s nothing to be gained from speculation”).

Silver explains that a dream collapsing and the darkness are two different things: dreams collapse when a dreamer wakes up, and “a strong enough shock in a dream—or in a reality—can jolt you awake.”

Silver beating Sebek in a physical fight is what awakens Sebek from his dream.

In-Game Examples: Silver uses his unique magic constantly throughout Book 7, with Ortho being his guide through the dreamway to infiltrate targeted dreams.

We get an example of Silver being in a dream that he does not realize is a dream in a vignette where he talks about successfully brewing a potion in class, earning him a compliment from Crewel, only to wake up and realize he had fallen asleep when class began and woke up when it was over.

UM Compilation Update: Ace Trappola

Ace’s unique magic Joker Snatch (hidden meaning: Gimme Your Trump Card) switches magic and/or a spell (EN uses both words) between Ace and a target of his choosing, manifesting during the climax of Book 7 when he uses it for the first time to swap Riddle’s unique magic with a spell/magic of his own and then uses Riddle’s “Off with Your Head” on Riddle himself.

In Book 7 the first-year students help Ace practice Joker Snatch, with Ortho observing, “Sebek and Ace have switched spellscript structures!” when he uses it on Sebek to receive Sebek’s Living Bolt.

When Ace electrifies himself and moves “barely 30 centimeters” he says, “You’re telling me this spell comes with its user’s glaring inexperience?!,” but Sebek insists that the inexperience lies with Ace, not himself, so the limitation of “Ace can only use a UM to the extent that it can be used by its original owner” is maybe still unproven.

Ace says, “Sebek’s unique magic shifts his body into a completely different form of matter. For spells like that, even if I understood how they worked, my body couldn’t keep up,” so Sebek’s UM might be of a type that is very difficult or impossible for Ace to utilize.

Jack says that when Ace tried to use his Unleash Beast he did not transform into any animal, but instead “just got all hairy like a yeti.”

This might, however, have not been a result of Ace’s inexperience: Jack’s UM is not a shapeshifting spell, it is a reversion spell, only enabling him to transform into a wolf because he is already a wolf beastperson (more here ▶︎).

Epel says that when Ace tried to use his Sleep Kiss he trapped Deuce by mistake rather than Epel himself.

Ace explains:

(Joker Snatch) just switches one spell with another. I’m not “robbing” people! It exchanges a spell of mine with a spell from the target. That’s it. I also can’t switch spells when I don’t know what kind of spells someone uses. If I’m expecting a fire spell but then it turns out to be a lightning spell, it doesn’t work. Plus, the target has to have fully formulated their spell, or mine will fizzle out.

Ortho says, “you have to have a read on the cards in the opponent’s hand to accurately make the switch,” and Cater agrees, “So you have to anticipate what your opponent will play next, ahead of time…like a card game.”

When Ace wonders why he had been able to successfully trade for Riddle’s spell in Book 7 Ortho observes:

The more data you have, the higher your odds of success will be. That data includes things like the timing of when the target spell is cast, as well as its effect and potency. In your case, Ace, You’ve had Off With Your Head cast on you so many times it’s become commonplace. Maybe that’s why you succeeded at making the switch, despite having only a moment to act.

Unique Magic / Signature Spell Compilation: Trey Clover

Trey explains his unique magic Doodle Suit (hidden meaning: Let’s Paint the Roses) as the ability to overwrite characteristics, saying that “it only lasts a little while” and “it’s kinda like covering up the real thing.”

Later we learn that Trey may have been intentionally downplaying his own ability: when he overwrites an overblotting Riddle’s magic, turning murderous rose trees into playing cards and dissolving the collars made from Riddle’s own unique magic, he surprises everyone including Riddle and Cater.

Trey explains, “I used it to make ‘Riddle’s magic’ into ‘my magic'” and Cater responds, “That’s some kinda loophole!”

Trey downplays his own accomplishment, saying that overwriting Riddle’s magic is not something he can normally do and he doesn’t think it would work again.

Trey reiterates this when Leona tries to get him to overwrite Riddle’s collar in the world of Riddle’s dream, saying that it is not something he can just do on demand. He makes the attempt and fails, getting collared as a result.

Trey also uses his unique magic during Vargas Camp to turn stones thrown at the students into rubber balls, and he tells a story of a time he overwrote the taste of an upperclassman’s cake in his first year, making it spicy as an act of revenge.

Trey also uses his unique magic during Book 7 in order to save Ortho, turning roses along a pathway into metal so that an army of darkness-Caters is forced to pursue him one at a time: “Careful, those thin leaves and petals can cut as cleanly as a sharpened kitchen knife.”

Trey explains that his unique magic isn’t suited for battle, unlike Riddle’s and Cater’s, so he intends to fight the darkness “the slow and steady way,” instead.

Trey also uses his unique magic during the Nightmare Before Christmas event to make a soup more palatable. Trey quietly reflects, “..but I only changed the flavor, not any of the actual ingredients. Ah, well. Look at the way they’re smiling. Why spoil the moment?”

Updated Unique Magic / Signature Spell Compilation: Jack Howl

In Book 7.5 we learn that Jack's UM Unleash Beast (hidden meaning: The howl that breaks the moonlit night) is a “reversion” spell rather than a “shapeshifting” spell.

When Ace tries to practice his magic-swapping UM on Jack he fails to transform into anything, with Jack saying that Ace “just got all hairy like a yeti.”

Later Jack explains that he can only use Unleash Beast because of his wolf ancestry.

Riddle asks, “Does that mean it’s a reversion spell rather than a shapeshifting spell?,” which Jack confirms: “So when Ace used it, he didn’t turn into a wolf. He just got all hairy.”

Jack acquired his unique magic the earliest out of the first-year group, but he says there wasn’t any particular impetus:

“My maternal grandfather used a reversion signature spell just like me. I really looked up to him. I kept trying to imitate it, and eventually it just clicked.”

Unique Magic / Signature Spell Compilation: Leona Kingscholar

Leona explains that his unique magic King’s Roar (hidden meaning: same, King’s Roar) enables him to dry things out and turn them into sand.

We receive more detail in the novels where it is described as similar to a natural disaster, drying out insects as they fly through the air while he can kinetically control the sand that he creates and make it move.

Leona says that he was born with his unique magic, which we also receive more information about in the novels as one of the reasons why he has struggled back home (another aspect of his life dictated by his birth that he neither chose for himself nor can do anything to change):

“Unique magic that is inherited at birth has nothing to do with the person’s will, but humans wrapped up in their own superstitions are ignorant to common sense. Or maybe they think this is a power that I desired, and fought to obtain.”  - Twst the Second Novel

Leona’s unique magic extends beyond drying out objects and the air: he is also capable of turning living creatures such as humans to sand.

Watching Leona use his unique magic in Book 2 Jack says that everything Leona touches turns to sand, but this may have been a misunderstanding of the limitations (or lack thereof) on Leona’s magic.

In Book 6 Leona mentions turning people, phantoms, objects and Grim into sand on accident if he is not careful, insinuating that the ability is not limited only to things that he has physically touched.

Leona also uses his unique magic during Halloween, turns ice to sand in Book 6, uses it during his dorm vignette to break up a fight and in Book 3 to destroy Azul’s contracts.

Leona also uses his unique magic in Book 7 to dismiss a dream projection of Kifaji.

Unique Magic / Signature Spell Compilation: Idia Shroud

Idia explains that his unique magic Gate to Underworld (hidden meaning: the Opened Door of the Underworld) is hereditary:

People born into the Shroud family possess a blood curse that burns blot. And they have a unique magic that opens and closes the gate to the Underworld.

We have seen Idia use his unique magic three times: once to open the gate to the Underworld in Book 6, once to close it again, and once to open it in his dream in order to escape the abyss in Book 7.
