El grupo femenino The Tammys sólo publicó tres sencillos en su momento, dos en 1963 y uno en 1965. "Egyptian Shumba" fue el segundo de ellos, monumentalmente loco desde el principio, troglodita, pre punki, vertiginoso como una montaña rusa, sublime rodaja de la mejor "stupid music".

Las hermanas Gretchen y Cathy Owens, y su amiga Linda Jones conocieron a Lou Christie en 1961 e hicieron los coros de sus primeras canciones, entre otras "Guitars & Bongos". Como United Artists las lanzó como grupo estrella, Christie tiró a continuación de Jessica James & the Outlaws, pero compuso con Twyla Herbert 4 de las 6 canciones de esos singles, "Egyptian Shumba" incluida.

Herbert, pareja compositiva de Christie, era una bohemia ex pianista de concierto metida al rock and roll 20 años más mayor que él. Se dice que tenía poderes adivinatorios y sabía que canción iba a ser un éxito y cuál no. Las Tammys no tuvieron éxito, pero "Egyptian Shumba" acabó por convertirse en un tema muy apreciado en la escena Northern Soul tardía, ya en los 2000.

Además de "Lighting Strikes", Lou Christie tuvo otros éxitos, buenas canciones como "Two Faces Have I" o "I´m Gonna Make You Mine", pero prefiero "Guitars and Bongos" de 1964, que ya puse hace años y ahora repito. Es una feliz síntesis bailable de Merseybeat y doo- wop, creo que mi canción popi favorita de Lou. Escuchaba la última mongolada de The Hives pero me quedo con ésta, es mucho mejor.

Otra buena, muy buena, es "Trapeze" de 1966. Pudo ser un éxito, pero inexplicablemente quedó relegada a la cara B de "Rhapsody In The Rain", no sé si por orden de MGM Records o por elección de los compositores Twyla Herbert y el propio Lou Christie.

Y ya que estamos, y a través de Billy Liar (¡Northern en la sala!), otra muy buena que no conocía, "She Sold Me Magic", otra cara B, de "Love Is Over" en 1970. En estas últimas, eso sí, se aprecia una molesta tendencia a "afalsetarlo" todo, o casi todo, como hicieron Bee Gees en los últimos setentas.

Odio el verano y todavía no ha empezado.
