A member of the leafhopper familiy (Cicadellidae), this brilliantly-colored sharpshooter is common throughout the Northeastern US, and can be found in grasslands, meadows, and gardens. It is a generalist feeder, consuming many different species of grasses and sedges, including crops like cotton and soybean (although not at levels where it would be considered a pest). It’s believed the green and black stripes help the sharpshooter blend into the leaves or grass as it feeds.
