TYPOGRAPHY STUDY // "why do you have to be so mean?"
February, 2023 logotype recap (in green)
This is my final project I did for my typography class this last quarter. The assignment was design a poster around a date in history. I chose my birthday since I was the 4th person to join my family and was born on the 4th day of the 4th month at 4:44. I thought it would be fun to work with a solution that had that much repetition which I have never done before. I didn’t realize how little variety there is with the form of the letter 4 in most typefaces. Nearly all the ones I found used the slanted triangular shape where all sides are touching. After a ton of looking around I found this 4 whose shape is right between slanted and perpendicular. The number 4 is interesting in that it is one of the only numbers that can be stacked in this way other then the number 7. Number 1 could also work but there isn’t as much area on the top to cover the numbers below it. After I finished the class I found out that the rapper Jay-Z was about to release an album called 4:44. As far as I can tell it has been the only time that someone has titled something 4:44. I was searching for type online (where you type in the text you want and it shows you what the font will look like with that text) and kept getting ads for his new album but the ads didn’t say that it was his album so I couldn’t tell what was going on! How funny.
Walking around the city
For the texts to be included in the video needed a clean and linear fonts and at the end after many trials we opted for the Futura designed by Paul Renner
