Last Tuesday we talked some about typecasting at Firefly Press - and we talked about setting type in hot metal on either Monotype or Linotype machines. Thanks the to Director of Communications at Rare Book School, Jeremy Dibbell, we are now aware of the fantastic resource that is Printing Films - many of which highlight the Linotype machine.

The film above, which was until recently very hard to view, is about the last issue of the New York Times set in hot metal with a Linotype. There is also a discussion of photo typesetting in the film - and the title is a reference to the lack of a “backspace” key on a linotype. We must admit to watching more than two of these in our spare time...

Remember last week we talked about Jason’s visit to Firefly Press in Boston? Well, we promised you all more posts over the next few Type Tuesdays, and here is the first of those…

Firefly is unusual in that not only is typesetting and printing done at the press (and even that is out of the ordinary, as the press prints primarily from “hot metal” as opposed to polymer plates) but type is also cast in the same shop. Type cast from “hot metal” is typically cast from molten lead. From the invention of movable metal type by Johannes Gutenberg until the late 19th century, type was typically cast one character at a time. Firefly has two machines that cast in this manner - called Monotype machines. One can cast a single sort of type over and over (if you need more “a”’s, for example” or cast type in a line, from paper rolls that are read by the machine. 

In the late 19th century, a bit of a revolution happened in typecasting - the introduction of the Linotype. The Linotype machine (pictured above) does exactly what it’s name says - it casts an entire line of type at a time. As you might imagine, having a machine replicate the manually involved task of setting type leads to an immensely complex machine. Indeed, there is a film about this machine, called (appropriately enough) Linotype: The Film:

The images above are from Firefly’s two Linotype machines, which set lines of type in various sizes. One sets type larger than the other, and so two machines are required for Firefly.

Sitting near the top of the machines are the matrices (the brass slivers above the keyboard above) - what the machine uses to cast the letters. These are arranged as they are entered by the operator (from the odd keyboard) and then cast into lines of lead type by the machine. The keyboard above has both lower and upper case letters, and it is arranged differently than the typical QWERTY keyboard.

Of course, being a mechanical typesetting machine, there is no “backspace” key on the Linotype, so if an operator makes a mistake in the line, they have to finish the line before redoing it. Typically operators ran their fingers down the first two columns of keys to finish a line, with the intention of taking the incorrect line out before putting the type in a page form. However, these mistakes on occasion ended up in the printed page, leading confused readers to wonder what “etaoin shrdlu” is:

So there is a very brief discussion of typesetting at Firefly. John indicated that even in the halcyon days of letterpress printing that this assemblage of machines would have been extremely rare, except in the very largest of print shops. So many operating typesetting machines are even more rare now, as is the knowledge to operate and repair them!

The illustration above shows the three stages of typesetting for printing with moveable type using a printing press. Titled “Imprimerie en lettres, L'opération de la casse,” it was created by Denis Diderot in approximately 1762 and can be found in the French Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et métiers, par une sociéte de gens de lettres.

It's back y'all! I know I've been slacking on my blog and I'm sure you've probably missed Typeface Tuesday : )

Don't fret - I've got a new ad today that I found on Spotify. It popped up during one of the commercial breaks.

*side note* I LOVE Spotify but still not enough to pay for their ad free service ; ) Besides, I'm one of the few who still likes looking at ads.

I'm not typically a huge fan of car ads or cars in general but I though this car ad was very nicely done. Good choice of typography, clean & simple layout, and nice colors.

#TypefaceThursday?

I know I know, it's Thursday, not Tuesday! I was super swamped this week at work, especially on Tuesday and haven't had time to post.

Last Friday was my first official (real-time-job) Christmas Work Party! It was held at Texas Land & Cattle. How perfect for the meat-lover I am.  I ended up ordering my co-worker's husband a steak to-go : ) But the party itself was great. Everyone was supposed to bring in a $10 limit gift for a gift exchange. The gifts that were stolen the most were $10 worth of scratch offs. I ended up with an iTunes gift card and some rubbery, tentacly, light-up worm thing haha. It was entertaining.  There were also some bigger prizes that a few people won for various reasons. One of the big gifts was awarded to the most Christmas-Spirited person...and I won! I have my great-grandmother's Christmas Bow earrings to thank : )

So I went up to the table to pick out my gift and my boss, Michelle, says "I bet it's a year's supply of meat!" as I'm unwrapping it. Turns out, it was a gift card to Honey Baked Ham hahaha. We all got a kick out of that. Luckily for me I was able to exchange that gift later on and picked out a wine, cheese, and chocolate picnic gift basket. It was much more suited to my taste. A winter picnic date has now been added to my to-do list : )

Overall it was a great night and really put me in the Holiday Spirit. My bare bones apartment is lacking any Christmas cheer. I forgot to bring the little 4ft tree my parents have back to AR after Thanksgiving break. With such little storage in my apartment I usually retrieve it from the basement at home every Thanksgiving Break and then bring it back when I return for Christmas with the family. Sadly, this year I will have to go without. 

Last week's Typeface Tuesday was Gotham. Arguably one of the best typefaces ever...in my opinion. Gotham was created by Tobias Frere-Jones and is a "hardworking typeface for the ages."

The package I took that from was the side of the Coke box. Their new design for the arctic winter and save the polar bears campaign has really caught my eye this year.

So now onto Typeface Thursday?

I actually found this infographic on Tuesday, thanks to my friend Aaron, but didn't have time to write the post. It's pretty humorous I think...or maybe just an inside joke but regardless, here it is. Judge for yourself.

#TypefaceTuesday

Hey everyone! 

This morning I woke up to a little Winter Wonderland of white snow : ) It was so pretty. I enjoyed its fresh, untouched beauty for a moment, until I realized I still had to go to work. No snow days in the Real World! Of course my car, with it's age and all, is not what you'd call a snowmobile of any sorts. I was barley 300 yards out of my parking lot and hit a patch of black ice that almost led me crashing into a ditch on the side of the road. Yikes! After that I proceeded to drive a nice 5mph to work. Every road was backed up, and there was a continuous stream of calls on the radio for traffic updates about wrecks and slow downs. I finally made it after about a 30 minute drive and I hope y'all arrived safely to work this morning too! Even though today's snow accumulation was probably only an inch or so it just didn't feel the same though without a free day to go play in the snow : )

Last week's TypefaceTuesday was an ad ripped from a Kansas City tour Guide. Thank you Anna Jacobs, who correctly guessed the typeface! It was indeed Knockout, designed by Jonathan Hoeffler. Knockout is such a great, versatile typeface and you can buy it here.

This week's typeface comes from a brand that has really stood the test of time. I took a picture of one of their packages and am asking you to correctly identify the typeface used.
