Basic types of boilers and the upgraded ones

Unattended boiler is the upgraded boiler that is used these days.

There are generally three types of boilers including attended, unattended, and limited attended boilers. Industrial boilers fall in one these three categories. In this blog, there is a brief description of these types.

Attended boilers:

The steam boilers are operated in the attended mode, in which a qualified on site operator is required at all the times. Nearly from 1990, with the development of micro processor based system, the control systems of the Goodman boilers had been upgraded by their owners. The micro processor based controls are in extensive use making the attended ones like an endangered species as the fully attended operations became unusual outside complex and large plants.

Unattended boilers:

These are the boilers that are completely automatic and operate under the control and supervision of a micro processor based BCS.  This is completely a recent phenomenon, equipped with the BCS, which controls the entire boiler function. These functions include the pressure controls, the alarm system, the water level management system, all instruments and circuitry. This type of boiler should be under continuous control and supervision of the BCS.

Limited attended boiler:

Rather than continuous supervision, these types are attended and checked periodically at minimum intervals which are preset. At any time, these may be attended and controlled by the fully qualified operator and are operated under the continuous supervision. All the boilers that are upgraded from the attended status and also the old packaged boilers come under the limited attended ones. These should be under the supervision during start up and shut down periods.
