What are your thoughts on Typhon Ephemeros?

I honestly feel like I still need more time to process her arc since we experienced her arc in its beginning, end, then middle. For a long time, I was a fan the Goetia character arc speedrun she was in the Grail Front, of the Yami Yugi she was in Adventures, and of the angsty teen protagonist of a Saturday morning cartoon she was in On Wings of Tears, but great as these all were, they never felt connected as parts of the same character. Now we got that missing tissue and Ephemeros is suddenly coherent, and I'm not used to this yet.

Overall I think my previous Thia post is perfectly applicable to her. Someone incredibly loyal to the purpose of her creation, but struggling hard with the burdens of having to physically and consciously exist for the first time ever. She's the only plant Servant we have so far, but I imagine this will be a common trend through all of them because all plants would be wholly passive beings before their ascension to Heroic Spirit status.

Well, unlike with Thia, her initial purpose and usage actually gives a lot of direction to her personality. She's an incredibly prideful girl, because her origin story is that she defeated Typhon who defeated Zeus, which according to her childish powerscaler mind, makes her the top dog of Greek mythology. And her core function as a wish reverser loads her with instinctual beliefs that desire is evil and humans are inferior sinful vermins for harming other creatures for their greed.

(Un)luckily for her, one of her first encounters ever was with Ptolemy, someone who lived by Iskandar's extreme romantification of dreams to be very complicated results. The success of Ptolemy's dream had bloody consequences for everyone he cared for, and he feels that more than anyone, but his ultimate answer is that he'd do it all over again, not for his own triumph but because carrying out the Diadochi Wars was a shared will glorified by all of Iskandar's followers (plus killing all friends was the most fun thing he ever did). This completely subverts Ephemeros's initial belief that she had an invincible moral ground and could rhetorically own any human she debated with. Ptolemy's complexity single-handedly invalidated Ephemeros's factory settings worldview, and challenged her to desire the freedom she needed to reinterpret the sinfulness of desire with her own eyes. But naturally, her wishes can't come true, so she instead becomes John Lackland's plot device.

If John and Ephemeros had more screentime together or if the event order was different, he could have been another incredible challenge to her initial worldview. He very masterfully manipulates her wish-reversing through sheer self-hatred, operating on perceived duties that run entirely contrary to his personal desires. Or if anything, he would have been her ideal of a human unblemished by the sins of desire if she wasn't herself desiring freedom when he captured her.

But while John is a walking display of her newfound incompatibility with her old principles, Enkidu is an example of what a wish granter can mature into upon outgrowing its programming and forming a new network of relationships to reshape their identity. Enkidu's validation that she can be what they became is the last push that makes On Wings of Tears fall into place next.

On Wings of Tears pertains the creation of Epsilon, a second Typhon fruit with none of Ephemeros's personality complications. Her idealized self. A regular wish granter who has all of Ephemeros's pride and honor, but without any doubts about her purpose, fear of making connections that will hurt the people she cares about, or the self-loathing that comes with the general unattainability of her own wishes. Epsilon is approachable, cheerful, and uncaring. All the things Ephemeros can't afford to be because of her nature.

Thia is someone who modeled himself after everything Flat isn't because he was just that lost thanks to his purpose not giving any baggage, but Ephemeros is his opposite. Her purpose gave her too much baggage, so to find her identity she instead had to reverse-engineer her Flat from her own undesirable traits.

El-Melloi Adventures theoretically exists separately from this whole FGO character arc, but her counterpart there feels fully actualized from start instead of stumbling at the baby steps like did in FGO. She's approachable enough to effortlessly form a relationship of mutual trust with Akira, and has normal conversations with Ruo and Rin about, with her hardcore tsundere ways intruding on her first contacts with strangers the way like it happens over there. She gets to be mature mentor of her dynamic with Akira, and I'm proud of her for getting this far.
