Typhoon Lan soaking the empty streets of Harajuku in the middle of the night tonight.
The damage from Typhoon Lan last Sunday was pretty incredible in some place, though the majority of the damage had been pretty well cleaned up by the time I left home that morning. People in Kita Ward, at least, are very house-proud, so they got up early to sweep away leaves and debris so people could go about their days normally. The shrine above is Kamigamo shrine, and the outer gates were pretty badly damaged by fallen trees. The river was also churning, muddy and higher than usual (though not the worst I’ve seen it). At the bottom, some fruit trees in the Imperial Palace gardens were all but bare. I’m not sure what the fruits are or if they’re edible, but they seem to be pear shaped, though the core is more similar to an apple with large, dark seeds.
So people have been asking me if I'm ready for the typhoon coming over Tokyo tomorrow...
