So, if you didn’t know, I happen to be an American, and this is how I learned some phrases in British English completely on accident.

Now to the part where I learn things about British English (way way different from American English, btw).

So I’m reading TWS, and kept getting confused at the way certain words were being used (also the single apostrophe thing instead of double to denote someone speaking, why do you do that?) such as “torch.” example being “I aimed my torch over to the wall.”

My American brain immediately went Indiana Jones and was so fucking confused about 1) how you would control the aim of a stick that was on fire and 2) why the fuck would you be using a stick that’s on fire to search for ghosts when a flashlight would be so much easier.

and then it hit me. torch is flashlight. just not here in America.

so yeah.
