qin nan is def a safest place in the world bf........but he's actually making me think of disability and ableism, in the sense that part of how his attractiveness is built/created/communicated (the architecture of it) is through his able-bodiedness. he runs up flights of stairs and beats up si bei's boss and picks her up and carries her around.

is there a word for the other side of the coin of ableism? a word for like the romaticization + eroticization of an able body? cause this is not something unique to qin nan, like i'd put healer under this category of romantic lead, too. def playing around with a man being The Protector, so able-bodiedness and gender construction + maintenance...

mmmmmm. need to think about romantic hero type: the safest place in the world. need a definition and then examples. off the top of my head there's gong ziyu (my current namesake and also a paragon of romantic love like. genuinely admire and respect this about him. he's romantically horny. and romantically hot. like. jesus.), jang kyungjoon from the love in your eyes, byuk soo from individualist ms. ji young, yu sifeng (!!!!!! in the heavenly realm when the god of war is chained and bruised and battered and heaving with resentment as she's being punished and he descends with his massive celestial wings spread to guard her from lashes & beatings and enclose her from the hypocritical scorn of the world and then he say he'll give up being a fucking god so he can accompany her in her tribulations GOD!!!!!!! THE SAFEST PLACE IN THE WORLD!!!!!).....

not in an emotional or intellectual space to define but characteristics include hugs, rest, them being able to handle volatile emotions (omg maru when eungi threw her fit and he just held her and sank to the floor with her i'm meeeeeeelllttiiiiiiinnnnngggggg), loyalty/devotion, returning after a fight/being able to return to them after a fight, the stripping of pride and ego...

characteristics: provides emotional support to heroine (the second husband, all about my mom, catch the ghost, once again, hogu’s love); protects heroine physically and may do so with his own life (happiness, come and hug me, golden rainbow, once again); respects and admires heroine’s work (hospital ship, the good wife, once again, hogu’s love); builds stuff (all about my mom, my husband oh jak doo); is calm and acts as a confidante (my unfamiliar family, obgyn doctors, once again); forgiving (my unfamiliar family, hospital ship); gets shit done (liar game, the good wife, nice guy)

watching fbrs and cha chi soo fall in love without understanding, admitting, or wanting it to happen is making me think of the different kinds of "falling in love" tropes for male leads in kdramas. so:

the robot falls in love - both metaphorically, like junrok in touch your heart or taehee from ojakgyo brothers, and literally, like shin iii in are you human too

he falls first - happens often with beta male leads, like in 20th century boy and girl and all about my mom , and with noona romances, like witch's romance, what's up fox, fbrs, and i can hear your voice

he refuses to believe it - usually a trait of the high maintenance bratty bf, like cha chi soo in fbrs; but also happens when there's a major "obstacle" that would keep the romance from coming to fruition

first love - here i'm thinking mostly childhood friends who fall in love--dojin from come and hug me, doyoung from golden rainbow

impressed and admiring - this is when the falling is particularly marked by being in awe, usually of skill or passion--so kwak hyun from hospital ship and ji seok from catch the ghost
