Artist’s Book! Twilight of Orthodoxy in New England (1987)

Lots happening in this gorgeous (and interesting) book designed by D’Ambrosio. The gold cast-paper decoration in the shape of flames (or setting sun) from the cover is reproduced in a cut out on the title page. The name on the title page is a pseudonym.

The sound made by the creaking of the leather spine is intended to evoke the preacher on horseback. (We agree that it does!)

Happy Typography Tuesday! It’s often the little details in early modern books that make them so special, and many of the items in our rare book collections have elaborate capital letters that begin each section. These three examples come from Pietro de Cortona’s Tabulae Anatomicae, which we posted some images from the other day (see those here!) If you look closely, you can see the plate marks around them that indicates these are copperplate engravings, not woodblocks. That means they were printed on a different press than the text block, a tricky process that meant that the text and the initials needed to be perfectly aligned. It’s sometimes easy to think of printed texts as the advent of mass production, but there was still plenty of room for artistry - there still is!

Elizabeth Elstob pioneered Anglo-Saxon studies in the early 18th century. This work, translated by Elstob and published in 1709, is a bilingual homily on Saint Gregory. The text is printed in two columns: one in Old English and the other in Modern English. The Old English is printed using Anglo-Saxon characters. This type was made especially for the printer by the Moxon-Andrew's Foundry. The font was destroyed by fire in about 1712. A new font was subsequently designed for Elstob's later work, also printed by Bowyers.

Happy Halloween! To celebrate, we’re sharing the cover and a few pages of this lovely 1899 edition of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. As noted above, the early art nouveau style borders and cover are the work of Margaret Armstrong, and the photogravures are by Frederick Simpson Coburn, who may or may not have read the tale, judging by the conspicuously un-beheaded ghost-like creature in the first image.
