BRIEF TWO.

Thinking about the content for my newspaper, I am going to take inspiration from these three books. 

1. Tracy recommended The Elements of Typographic Style to me, which is packed full of really useful guidelines and information for typographers. This however is quite a content heavy book, so it might take me some time to go through it. I am thinking of just picking some key sections from it and rolling with that.

2. Know Your Onions (graphic design), also has a small typographic section in it, which I thought would be good for a little section on knowing the ‘basics’ of typography, and understanding the starting points.

3. The main book that I think is going to be of use to me, is Just My Type, by Simon Garfield. I read this book back in first year, and I distinctly remember it because it made the typefaces interesting - he gave them personality. This is the approach that I was thinking of taking with my newspaper, therefore I think it is going to be a great source of inspiration.

BRIEF TWO.

So today was the day that everything finally came together! Jonny had very kindly agreed to photograph my work for me, so we both went to his studio to snap up my paper. I basically directed the shoot, following the inspiration from my previously shown mood board, and some sketches, to create the final images. 

The photos have turned out beautifully, and now it’s a case of editing the photos to make them ready for submission and to be placed into my portfolio. It’s lovely to see the outcome of my work coming together beautifully in a photo, so that it captures what it is all about.

BRIEF TWO.

While it is all a bit of a mess at the moment, I am currently working on designing the layout for my newspaper. I have put all of the content onto the spread, and I am trying to now figure out a coherent layout, that makes for a visually interesting read. I don’t want it to be straight lines and blocks of text, I want it to be interesting and playful. I thought about doing this by creating a layout based off the shape of a hashtag (#), however this didn’t go as planned (as you can see above). I am going to continue experimenting with the layout, as well as adding in some imagery and thinking about another colour in the mix. 

It is all a work in progress, but it is progress nonetheless!

CONTENT // QUIZ GENERATION

BRIEF TWO.

Taking inspiration from BuzzFeed’s quiz, as previously posted about. I have created a quiz that can be included in the newspaper. People pick their answer choice, and depending on which letter they have the most of then that is their perfect typeface. This is not a 100% accurate quiz - it is just meant to be a bit of fun! I have included some cheeky answer choices too (which are also on the original quiz), which goes with the tone of voice of the newspaper, which makes it a bit more fun.

I won’t go into too much detail about the quiz now, as I want it to have that exciting buzz about it when I finish the newspaper and showcase it to my tutors and peers.

BRIEF TWO.

Having not had any luck with the Pentagram quiz, I then did a general search for quizzes that would dictate what typeface you are and came across a BuzzFeed one. I have to say I got very excited when it came up with Futura, because it is my favourite font! This is definitely a quiz I can take inspiration from, however I need to find one that it is a little bit simpler so that I can have it so it is not digital.

I feel like I could even have one within the newspaper, and then a link that people can go to where there is a more elaborate quiz and it shows you more in-depth information about your designated type.

RESEARCH // PENTAGRAM, WHAT TYPE ARE YOU?

In 2010, Pentagram released an online quiz that would enable you to find out what typeface you were. Unfortunately, this quiz is no longer available - and I’m not too surprised considering it is eight years old! This however would have been perfect to include within my newspaper - I shall begin on a hunt for a similar quiz that will do the same job, in order to help me create my own.

BRIEF TWO.

Having shown Tracy my original idea for the name of the newspaper, she was concerned that it was too much like Vince Frost’s signature identity, using the asterisks. Having reflected back on this, with the inclusion of the tart cards within the newspaper, I think that changing the name to look even more like a swear word would fit really well with the tone of voice that the newspaper will evoke. I really want to stick to the word “font” as the name of the newspaper, but then playing with it to make it look like a swear word, which fits nicely in with the target audience. I have emailed Tracy to see what she thinks, and will continue on from her feedback!

Tracy replied saying that she liked the simple swap of the asterisk for the hashtag, so this is the identity that I am going to carry forward with!

Same font, same style, just a symbol change!

BRIEF TWO.

Developing on with the content for my newspaper, I have researched into the most popular fonts of 2018 and formulated a list of the most popular sans serif typefaces, and serif typefaces. I also found a list where someone has predicted what will be the hot fonts of 2018, so I have also included this.

I have also done a list of books and websites that I would recommend, based off my own usage of them. These are just little things that I will be including in the back of the newspaper.

RECAP.

I have nearly finished the content of the newspaper, I am just waiting for Jane Anderson to get back to me about the Type Society information, and I need to see if I can formulate a quiz to include within the newspaper. I am also going to research into typographic tart cards, which were recommended for me to include by my tutor, as well as reconsidering the name of the newspaper (because it holds too similar aesthetics to Frost* Collective).
