In 1602, Rory O'Donnell (1575-1608) succeeded his brother as Lord of Tyrconnell and chief of Clan O'Donnell. After traveling to London, where he submitted to King James I of England, he was created Earl of Tyrconnell on September 4, 1603. Due to his disagreements with the English Crown, he and other Irish nobles sought support in Europe for a new rebellion, the Flight of the Earls, which ultimately failed. He died the following year in Rome, Papal States.

He was an Austrian officer and civil servant who became famous when he helped save the life of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria. O'Donnell was a descendant of the Irish noble dynasty of O'Donnell of Tyrconnell.

A new one from Tyrconnell and Pernod Ricard. Amid all the new-brands-but-same-whiskey coming out thanks to the Irish whiskey boom, it’s nice to see an older, somewhat accessible, original distillery expression hitting the shelves. This one should be around $100US.
