During the outbreak at Whittemore that sends the immune seven insane, Tyson King is dragged from his game by his best friend Justin Moore. As his wedding ring falls to the floor, he regains a certain level of sanity, immediately grabbing the cure from the ground and stabbing himself. As the building begins to go up in flames, the thought of Riley and his soon to be daughter is the only thing that drags him back from the ground, bleeding but not broken, he and Justin manage to get out of the building as the flames begin to heighten. Tyson standing outside, regaining his consciousness fast, aware that things are going terribly wrong and it’s partly his fault for letting psychosis overtake him. As hysteria breaks out over the news that Daisy French is still in the building, nobody is sure what to do, flames gathering fast and Riley, seeing Tyson and knowing what he’s going to do, begs him not to go but he doesn’t listen. With adrenaline in his veins, he’s sure he can make it and as he sprints through the house of mirrors to find Daisy, he uses what little strength he finds he still has to yank her from the ground, a piece of glass wedged in her side, she is unable to walk and so he pretends that he’s fine, ignoring the blood soaking through his clothes as he picks her up and carries her out of the building. Proclaimed a hero, he ignores his pain, nervous about what’s unfolding as Riley, 7 months pregnant grabs onto him, trying to see what’s wrong. He knows how close he came to losing her, after all these years, he’s just glad in that moment that he might get a second chance to put things right, to be a Father to his daughter once his wounds are healed. He just smiles.
His relief is short lived as Sam cries out for Clara, each person turning to the next, all injured and weak, Sam’s wound is all too clear, a metal bar physically rammed into his leg, a self inflicted wound from before he could feel pain. It’s obvious he won’t make it to his sister, Tyson turns, “Please, Ty, don’t,” Riley begs, already knowing what’s about to happen. He simply looks at her, “I’m sorry, I’ll be back,” he doesn’t say I love you, it’s too final. Instead, his mind whirring, wounds opened, he ignores everyone’s shouts, seeing the headmaster climb through a gap in the flames, he follows, running up to the second floor where Millie and Clara are both unconscious. He feels his stomach turn as pieces of building collapse, Millie clearly lost in the process of the chaos that’s been created, he says a silent prayer as he watches Sean French disappear and lifts Clara up. Much to his surprise, the girl wakes up and instead of being thankful of her rescue begins to fight him. She has no idea but his body is giving up as he grasps her, blood pouring out from places he didn’t even know he can bleed from. She screams at him to let go, to let her die but he won’t. He can’t. He promised himself he wouldn’t leave her behind. He promised Sam. Maybe it hadn’t been out loud but it happened. He fights her all the way down the corridor of broken mirrors, all the way to the end of the second floor hall as the world crumbles around them and in one moment, Tyson knows. They can’t make it. Or at least, he can’t. Her nails drag against his skin, he holds her as tightly as he can, pretending that he believes in himself, he has to. As he nears a second floor exit, he pushes it open, his final chance as he feels the world collapsing, he flings her out of the window, hoping that at least if she hits the grass she might live. He would do anything for them to live. The very same second that he pushes the girl out, Tyson takes his last breath. The building collapses on top of him, crushing him in one final tragic turn. His last thought is that he should of said that I love you.
