hi! so i saw a challenge a few weeks back to start making monthly fic recaps and i thought it seemed like a really fun idea. i also had the pleasure of reading a ton of amazing fics this past month, so i have a lot of recommendations! so without further ado, here are my favorite fics of january 2021: 

take my hand, wreck my plans by @zukkababey (11k, rated T): this gorgeous fic has been a long time coming and it was so, so, SO worth it! loosely based on the song “willow” by taylor swift, it picks up immediately post-canon and, with a little angst, explores zuko’s hesitance to become the leader of the fire nation. it has a very, VERY happy and heartfelt ending! this fic is also technically a sequel to one of MY fics AND technically a birthday gift for me, so it holds an especially special place in my heart! 

king of my heart by @bisexuallsokka (4k, rated T): basically this fic is peak idiots-to-lovers and my heart swells every time i think about it. in this modern, university AU 5+1, zuko struggles (A LOT) to keep his crush on his best friend a secret. i’m not kidding when i say this fic will change how you view hot cheetos forever. this fic was ALSO gifted to me and i’m still not over it. 

Speed Dating by @tysukis (6.5k, rated T): please believe me when i say this is just about the most hilarious zukka fic i’ve read in my life. without giving too much away, this fic begins in the aftermath of sokka being hit by a car and assuring his sister “Katara- of course I looked. I did. I looked both ways, both handsome and radiant. Get it?” plus, zuko is a sexy doctor. what more do you need??? i honestly just wish i was as funny as scarlet is. 

seven(teen) minutes in heaven by @bisexuallsokka (rated T, 3.5k): yes another jo fic because...AHH! after losing a bet to toph, sokka and zuko are locked in a closet and well...the title says the rest. i promise you’ve never read a kiss like this one! (also, because jo is amazingly prolific, i have to give a shoutout to that’s ruff, buddy and the road not taken (looks real good now), two other incredible works from this month!) 

victory lap by @dickpuncher420 (26k, rated T): olympics AU, hockey player sokka + figure skater zuko. this is one of those ones where you get into it knowing it’s going to be good, and it ends up being so, SO much better. the tension and the flirting between these two is just absolutely unmatched. if for some reason you have been putting off reading this fic, take this as a sign that IT’S TIME!

if you weren’t writing for atla, do you think there’s a different fandom you’d be writing for instead?

hmm.. short answer is no? i can only do 1 fixation at a time, and they tend to last for like.. years so I only read atla fic and consume atla content and it’ll probably stay that way for the foreseeable future 😅

but long answer is I probably would’ve written during my 1d fixation, I mean I definitely came up with multiple fic ideas and there’s some google docs out there with half-fleshed out ideas, but I never actually followed through on any of it and probably never will like I can’t imagine ever going back to that fandom so :/ atla is stuck with me asdhlakha
