Recently spent time with one of my parents. I'm currently learning Greek, so some language musings:
The saying 'κάθε παραλία έχει ο μαλάκας της' ('every beach has its wanker') is new to me, but I like how well it translates into English.
I was also introduced to Tzimis Panousis, and I've been listening a lot to his first album over the past few weeks. I'm trying to understand the lyrics, some of them are obviously difficult both because of my shitty Greek, but probably also because of being written in a context that I'm unfamiliar with. Anyway, I'm trying to get to grips with his song Disco Tsoutsouni (Disco dick?) - the lyrics seem to be about getting a colorful outfit, shaving your pits, getting ready to head out. There's also a line going something like 'just like fish doesn't live on dry land, the KKE youth don't live with freaks'. Contextually I'm getting that this is a jab at rigid members of the youth wing of the Greek communist party, and φρικία seems to be able to refer to pretty broad counter-cultures/subcultures? Anyway, at first I just assumed that the text was about queer men, and I don't necessarily think that this reading is impossible with the text? This was before I got the part about κνίτες being members of KNE, but surprisingly that almost makes it make even more sense...
