I don't have the technological knowhow to make gifs out of anything more complex than a Youtube video, but the way Bono's face changed as Edge was speaking had me and my viewing partner tearing up a bit.
This is a long post but it’s really all about The Edge so bear with me
U2 fans near and far: If you get the email about Music Rising’s virtual Bourbon Street auction site, you ought to consider signing up and checking it out. Even if you can’t possibly bid for a guitar.
I signed up, and I guess I was one of the first. Traveled around a little. The virtual rooms (with adorable Virtual Edge!) are really, really cool. Lots of background about New Orleans and its influence on music history. And of course you can view the stuff that’s on auction—each item in its own separate “room.”
But I was by myself and it was a little awkward. A friend on twitter said “click this link and we can hang out.” I don’t know how she figured it out, but I did it. So did Kelly. This friend then pulled us into a virtual U2 Dressing Room where you could mess with cowboy hats and beanies and such. :)
Hung out there for a bit, making awkward convo with a handful of fans and two guys who actually work for u2.com. The u2.com guys said they were streamlining the sign-up so that hopefully by tomorrow everyone will just be able to see each other. Nice, fine, okay.
AND THEN EDGE APPEARED. We thought it was another virtual version. BUT IT WAS NOT VIRTUAL; IT WAS ACTUAL EDGE.
So of course I pretended to faint and he laughed. (Score!)
Then he chatted with us for quite some time. As you already know, Edge is the sweetest, kindest, most eloquent guy. He was all of that today, and just all smiles the whole time. He mostly stayed on topic about Music Rising and New Orleans, but no one (thankfully) was asking him anything invasive or demanding a new ZooTV tour or anything like that. So it was all very natural and friendly. This wasn’t a room with hundreds of people—there were maybe 12 of us at most? CRAZY.
Important: He said he’d try to turn up every now and then when people were assembled (whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name, lolz). And he said while he couldn’t promise anything, he’d encourage other artists to do the same.
Anyway, here’s visual evidence:
That’s me, at the bottom, RIGHT THE FUCK ON EDGE’S LEFT, thankfully not in one of the virtual outfits. Kelly got the cool leather jacket, at right. (Kelly and others were piling virtual hats on top of Edge.)
YES, we spent a good deal of time recovering from this and I am still a bit giddy. We are not “insiders.” Nothing like this ever, ever happens to me.
“Adam told me a long time ago that its important to look out for friends who live on their own. He explained that they are more vulnerable; they need more looking out for than people who live with a partner or a family. He's really good at checking in with friends and I know how much they appreciate that.” — Gary Jermyn, friend of U2

A few years back the acclaimed Irish poet Brendan Kennelly [the guy who urged Bono to write as if he were dead] was invited by an Irish newspaper to review U2's album Achtung Baby - and, in return, Bono reviewed Kennelly's epic poem The Book of Judas. Kennelly remained a fan of U2 and in 1997 Propaganda invited him to cast his poet’s ear over the latest U2 recording. – u2.com
“No album that I can recollect begins with a climax since a climax is a moment of passionate utterance which has to be assiduously prepared for. Yet this is the first daring feature of 'Pop'. 'Discotheque' is a sexual-spiritual climactic song, a musical peak, and it booms us, from the very opening moment, into a world in which love is scrutinised from many angles, different perspectives, and in an astonishing variety of voices.“
