[U2Y Pt. 2] WINNER SUBS - Suggestions, Feedback, etc.
Here is part 2 of our U2Y (Us to You) corner!
"hmm , i suggest you can use some of the sign from runningman ."
At first most of us couldn't understand what this was asking, but then one of our staff pointed out that you most likely were referring to the iSubs squad that subs Running Man. Hopefully, she was right or else we really don't know what you were referring to haha. The reason iSubs is able to sub everything (from dialogue to repeating captions to even the background music) is because they have a lot more staff, not to mention that they release a video every 30 days. We do not have that many staff nor do we (or the rest of you) have the patience of waiting for a month for one episode to be subbed.
Conclusion: If you want subs that document everything, you must either a) give us more days to sub and/or b) give us more timers & typesetters (like, a whole bunch more) because it's very time consuming to sub everything. So at this moment, we are unable to do such detailed subs given our timeframe.
"the grammar/sentence structure of some of the trans a bit weird
eg→ "even when you only hear the beat a little." The flow of the sentence seems a bit awkward!"
This can often happen when we rush during the subbing process or just reflexively type out the literal translation. Sometimes we send off the final files forgetting to QC or just forgetting to send the file with the final corrections, which can result in stuff like grammar errors and such happening.
Conclusion: We will keep a closer eye out on editing/QC'ing to ensure the best final product as possible, though since we are only human, we can't guarantee 100% mistake-free subs.
"I do love your subbing work. But if you can, can you not close the caption?
I mean, I studying korean right now,and some of your subbing word close the hangul so I can't read it.
but if you didn't do it it's ok,just suggestion.."
We're thinking you meant that you wanted to see both the Korean captions and our subbed captions. However, if we were to do that, it would be hard to place the captions without covering a good portion of the video (for example: Minho's diary).
Conclusion: There are times when it is inevitable where we must cover up the original to maintain the quality and it's just not plausible.
"if possible, i wish after completing subbing all the parts, you guys can actually merge the whole parts to become 1 complete file.
and then, if possible to upload that one complete file on youtube stream or cloud drive(for download link) or torrent link.
And for the .srt files. can you guys also upload the compatible raw version to be merge with the .srt files?"
If we were to upload the hardsub files as one file, you're talking around 1 GB+ of a file. That's extremely large and lots of problems can happen (ie. Internet problem, etc.) All of our hardsubbed files that are available for download can be downloaded all at once in a folder or ZIP package. All you need to do is use HJSplit and join the files together.
Conclusion: Please wait for us to give out the links to download hardsubbed files, so that you may download the whole folder at once. We will be posting up links to the RAWs we used this time so that people will not get confused on which they should use with our SRT files.
"Pretty font colours please :( why black... Eg. Ssf uses pink subs, cxo using yellow with black outline subs.. Can winnersubs uses something like that too?"
We typically style our subs to match with the original video so that it's not distracting and looks more natural. For example, during the WIN days, we styled our subs to match with the original videos.
Conclusion: In the future, for videos that are not part of a show (ie. award ceremonies, general interview, etc.) we will style them in a different color.
"please can u more bright the font"
"Larger size and normal colored fonts"
The brightness is actually different for everyone, depending on your computer monitor display. We have also been experimenting with font sizes to see which is better and will fit in the screen.
Conclusion: We suggest you change your computer monitor's settings if you have issues with color. For font sizes, please bear with us a little longer as we find an equilibrium between what's too small and what's too much.
And that wraps up our U2Y corner for tonight! Thank you everyone for your insightful feedback, and please rest assured that we have taken your suggestions into consideration.

[U2Y Pt. 1] WINNER SUBS - Suggestions, Feedback, etc.
Firstly, thank you to everyone who participated in our survey! Your feedback and insights were much appreciated and helped us know what we needed to improve on. If you haven't filled out the survey yet, please do so here!
In this first part of U2Y (Us to You), we will be replying to the suggestions, feedback, etc. that we have received already. We will be posting up more parts later once we have amassed more feedback.
"Use adf.ly to pay for your subbing team"
Many people have commented that using adf.ly would be a great way to help out our subbing team and I definitely agree. However, I also find them extremely annoying and very easy to bypass once you have the actual video link.
Conclusion: I have decided that we will be keeping links to the videos adf.ly-free for now, but we will be using adf.ly for those who would like to download hardsubs and such. I think that this is a pretty decent favor we ask, since we don't require any minimum posts or donor status to access our downloads section, unlike other forums.
"I like the font but I also like other types of font that subbing teams use that look more pleasing to the eye. Maybe it's just me but I'm not a fan of just the normal arial font"
We have our own standard font (which isn't Arial), but since WINNER TV is a completely new show and we had no idea what to expect, we were playing around with the styles and such for this first episode.
Conclusion: We will be going back to our standard font in the future episodes.
"Name of the members or their initials are included at the beginning of the translation so it's easier for us to know who's talking OR color code the subs"
A good amount of people have requested for this, but this is actually extremely difficult and time-consuming to do. You may ask, "What's so difficult about picking a color?", and my answer will be that it's not the color-changing that's difficult, but knowing who is speaking. At this stage, we're used to WINNER's voices already, but there are still times when we have no idea who is speaking what.
Conclusion: Because we can't just put ??? in the beginning, we have opted to not do color-coding for the members. The closest thing we would consider would be separating WINNER into just one color and other people (ie. artists, staff, etc.) into another one color.
"I think you should upload th videos in more other sites so that if example youtube blocked, another site can be used."
As of right now, we are currently using YouTube and Dailymotion. We used to have a backup Vimeo channel, but that was until we found out that the free plan for Vimeo had a limited video size that you could upload, which just wasn't plausible for our videos.
Conclusion: For now, we will be using only YouTube and Dailymotion, but if you have suggestions on other good (free) video uploading sites that may be used, feel free to tell us!
"if you could put the video as one or decrease the number of cut."
This is honestly out of our control. On YouTube, for example, after receiving notices of copyright infringement or Content ID claims, you are no longer able to upload videos beyond 15 min. Since WINNER TV is more or less around 45 minutes or so, we cannot do anything less than 3~4 parts. Uploading in 1 part is a longer process because usually when we upload parts 1 and 2, we're still doing last-minute QC checks on the remaining parts.
Conclusion: At this time, uploading as 1 long video or less than 3~4 parts is not possible.
"Maybe you could be more detailed? Because sometimes they show the fans and their banners but I can't read Hangul and understand what's written on their banners..."
Most of the time, what's written on the banners are just the members' names, so we didn't feel a need to translate them. The banners that we do translate are the ones that are more than just the member's names.
Conclusion: We will probably add in a translator's note in the future, probably saying something along the lines "T/N: The banners are just names of the WINNER members."
"Timing for the video. There were certain subs which were not in sync to the video. There were some korean word-play that i didnt underatand so it will be good if there were a note to it."
You might be used to our past way of timing for WIN, where we timed our subs to the original video's subs as well. However, for WINNER TV this time, we decided to time instead to the actual dialogue instead of the video. In addition, sometimes the actual video doesn't even have subtitles for what people are saying.
Conclusion: Depending on the majority, we may or may not return back to timing with the original video instead of the actual dialogue. We will also make sure to have more translator notes explaining the meaning for future episodes.
That concludes U2Y Part 1! If you didn't see your comment in this list, it will either be:
