As a Library and Archives Mellon Fellow in my third year of studies at Buffalo State College, I am very excited to intern at the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation & Conservation Department. I am eager to improve my skills while contributing to the program at the New York University Libraries. I look forward to the challenges of the internship, sharing the projects that I will undertake here throughout the year.
One of my first projects was to take apart two of the university archives bulletin publications ranging from years 1946 to 1949. The UA bulletin comprises of pamphlets, leaflets, and various other announcements to its students and faculty. It is a real insight to the university's past curriculum. The purpose of this ongoing project is to reorganize the material by topic instead of a year, which will make the material more accessible to the researcher.
The bulletins were originally bound in large binders that were about 5 inches thick! They were all side-sewn at about half-inch intervals, and in some instances adhered along the edges to each other or to stubs. This sewing structure restricted access to them. After taking apart the sewing and separating the adhered leaflets using mild aqueous methods, the tears in the paper were mended and the losses were consolidated. This set of bulletins is now ready for an archivist!
