Last week we had a great turn out for the premiere of Prometheus! We were welcomed by the wonderful staff of the Roosevelt 2.0 in Ybor who offered us unique food, great drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. Not only were we able to meet with potential donors to our cause, but also connect with members of our community. It was an amazing start to our campaign and we greatly appreciate all of the support we have received from the Tampa Bay Area.
Prometheus Premiere Tonight!
Tonight is the night! The premiere of our very own documentary, Prometheus, is showing at 7 pm at the Roosevelt 2.0 in Ybor. After months of hard work, we are ready to get the community involved in our efforts to cure violence in the UAC. Please come out tonight to get informed, enjoy a great atmosphere, mingle with people within your community, and have some FUN! We thank you for all the support we have received from the community and can’t wait for a fantastic evening!
Location: Roosevelt 2.0 1812 N 15th St, Tampa, FL
Many members that work on promoting the Prometheus Project voluntarily devote their free time to this cause, but why? Well many of us are university students in the area who, up until we began working for the UACDC, did not know a problem existed. The gravity of the situation did not occur to us. So how does this affect us? Part 1 violent crimes (rape, murder, burglary) are being committed in our backyard. In fact, these crimes occur so often that part 1 violent crimes committed in the University Area Community (UAC) are 25 times higher than the national average. This violent activity affects all of us. Victims of these crimes could potentially be our friends, family, or coworkers. So when do we fight to change the statistics? Should we wait until we are directly affected by this violence? The time to break the chains of violence is now.
79% of part 1 violent crimes in unincorporated Hillsborough County occur within the University Area Community. The University Area Community Development Corporation (UACDC), in an effort to diffuse the epidemic of violence within the University Area Community, contacted the NGO Cure Violence out of Chicago recently to view their public health approach to treating violence. Founder and epidemiologist, Dr. Gary Slutkin utilizes the same techniques he would use in Africa to isolate malaria and the HIV epidemic in the Urban areas of Chicago. However, he is not using these techniques to treat communicable diseases, but the social phenomenon of violence. The Cure Violence model has had some outstanding findings; the model has been proven over the past decade to decrease violence 40 to 60% in the most violent communities that it has been applied in. We are launching a site of the Cure Violence model here in the University Area Community which we call the Prometheus Project.
