UBSA Small Concert; MSMR
First time working on the Mainstage at the Center for the Arts at UB, working as a stagehand and audio tech.
We had our shop day for SpringFest last Sunday, when we addressed the fixtures and patched and played with the console. I was the student programmer, so I spent most of the day working on palettes and laying out the board for Spencer. We were able to use Quantum washes, a fixture with 3 rings of LED control for some basic pixel mapping. We loaded in Friday, during which I did some more board work with Spencer then turned over the desk to him for all of Saturday. I also got to climb tower and seat the chains in the head blocks.
Saturday afternoon the GrandMA 1 (Full) started crashing, so in the scramble to troubleshoot we brought in a Hog and patched it offline and a MA Ultra-Lite. The Ultra-Lite only puts out 2 universes and we needed four, so I worked with a technician who brought the Ultra-Lite to network two ColorBlast power supplies to output the other two universes via sACN. Lo and behold, the MA lasted the whole show without crashing, so we didn’t have to use either of hte backup consoles.
A few photos from SpringFest 2016 at UB, tech pics to come tomorrow
Been a while. USITT was great, met a bunch of the tech community and made some awesome contacts. Buffalo is quite busy, between the prep for SpringFest and A Ring Never Ends. Above is the site plan for Fest - site B is laid out, StageLine sl320 + sl100 FOH position, trucks, bravo decking. Still have to put in tents and bike rack. Site A is also in the drawing, still need to finish the architecture and lay out the site A plans.
Another day, another GrandMA. Helped out Tony, the LD for The Jackson's, get his show patched and effects running, as his show file was for the MA2. Focused truss and threw weight too, it was a busy night.
On a cold, dark, rainy night in early November, Colm Wilkinson’s lovely tenor voice brought some much-needed light and warmth to the Buffalo area with the return of his celebrated Broadway & Beyond concert at the UB Center for the Arts. Despite the unwelcoming, dreary weather, he happily greeted the audience – “It’s nice…
Okay. Here’s another review of the U. of Buffalo concert (by Dianne Gebauer of the nytheatreguide.com)
(excerpts from her review in quotes -- rest is my take on him)
Here’s COLM WILKINSON in a nutshell -- in the same concert he tells DIRTY JOKES:
“Throughout the evening, Wilkinson, dressed in a sleek black suit, walked about the stage with a shy smile and quick wit as he entertained and engaged the audience with his easy demeanor, infectious energy and passion, and funny anecdotes and jokes ---- he stated, “I told [them] last time; they’re filthy and I know you love it.”
And then goes on to move the author TO TEARS:
“I must admit, it was a lifelong dream to see Wilkinson perform both of these songs [Music of the Night and Bring Him Home ] live in concert, and even the memory of these moments moves me to tears.”
And then she describes his ending the concert this way:
“As the final note of Wilkinson’s angelic falsetto rang throughout the theatre, he was met with an almost deafening applause and thunderous cheers accompanying a long-lasting, well-deserved standing ovation.”
WOW.

In honor of COLM WILKINSON’S first concert of his winter tour tonight in Buffalo, NY in the GOOD OL’ USA -- Here’s ‘Mr. Dynamite’ JAMES BROWN singing “LIVING IN AMERICA” -- words & music by Dan Hartman and Charlie Midnight
“Living in America” Lyrics:
Yeah, uh! Get up now! Ow! Knock out this!
Super highways, coast to coast, easy to get anywhere On the transcontinental overload, just slide behind the wheel How does it feel
When there’s no destination-that's too far And somewhere on the way, you might find out who you are
Livin' in America-eye to eye, station to station Livin' in America-hand to hand, across the nation Livin’ in America-got to have a celebration
Rock my soul
Smokestack, fatback, many miles of railroad track All night radio, keep on runnin' through, your rock 'n' roll soul All night diners, keep you 'wake, on black coffee, and a hard roll
You might have to walk the fine line, you might take the hard line But everybody's workin' overtime
Livin’ in America-eye to eye, station to station, Livin' in America-hand to hand, across the nation, Livin’ in America-got to have a celebration
I live in America, help me out, but I live in America, wait a minute. You may not be looking for the promised land, but you might find it anyway, Under one of those old familiar names,
Like New Orleans (New Orleans) Detroit City (Detroit City) Dallas (Dallas) Pittsburgh P.A. (Pittsburgh P.A.) New York City (New York City) Kansas City (Kansas City) Atlanta (Atlanta) CHICAGO AND L.A.!
Livin in America-hit me, Livin’ in America-yeah, I walk in and out, Livin’ in America
I live in America-state lines, gonna make the prime, I live in America-hey I know what it means-I
Livin’ in America. . ., Livin’ in America-hit me, eye to eye, station to station, Livin’ in America, Livin’ in America – I feel good!
ádh mór ort Mr. Wilkinson!
