Wednesday's Workout: ATS 2
Belly dance class was a lot of fun! I really missed dance, and I've missed @uberwench's classes. It's been a while since I took her class, and even longer since I took a class in ATS. I liked ATS well enough the last time I studied it, but I liked it a lot more last night. It was also super cool to see a former dance buddy classmate, who has switched to the studio as well (the last time we took a class together was probably Scarlet Spark's first session at the rec centre).
Seems to me that these days, I have a lot of followers that are from more of a fitness background, so I better explain what ATS is. From wikipedia:
American Tribal Style Belly Dance or Tribal Style Belly Dance (also known as ATS or Tribal) is a modern style of bellydance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio.[1] American Tribal Style Belly Dance is clearly defined and documented with the primary characteristic being that of group improvisation. Tribal is generally performed in a group, often at community events such as festivals and parades, with tribal dancers typically favoring a look provided by wide-legged pants gathered at the ankles (aka pantaloons), tops known as cholis and full skirts.

ATS arm posture sure is hard. With my sore arms from heavy combat, I did my best to keep my elbows up and my fingers pretty. Elinor took us through a belly dance warmup/review where we learned some cues, and then we worked on moves from the ghawazee move family (ghawazees, ghawazee accents, and ghawazee accents with a turn).
I'm just so happy to be back in a dance class. In September, I couldn't fund everything I wanted to do, so I didn't do any of it, and I don't think that was very wise. I had wanted to do belly dance and ballet. I think what I've figured out is that I can't really dedicate the time I'd like to ballet to get good at it (in part because I just really don't have adequate space to practice at home), where I have better resources to take belly dance classes and work at home as well (my spare room isn't great, but it'll do). I think ATS will help me with fitness instruction cues (specifically, timing of cues) and it'll be a little easier on the brain that I won't have to memorize choreography for this class. The improv aspect of ATS is pretty fun, and I'll get choreography on Saturdays in an Egyptian class (AND I have Shimmy Mob choreography to learn, too). I really enjoy being a dance student, and I think the group and improv dynamics of this class will help me to train like a super hero (which, frankly, is currently the theme of my blog!)
Today's Workout: Gotta finalize my class for the figure skaters (we go back to off ice on Friday!). I also have to do my resistance workout, and should work on Shimmy Mob choreography.
