i go to a CCC. Will taking only three classes per quarter lessen my chances of getting into uc berkeley? I have AP credit that counts as units so I would still meet the unit requirement by the deadline for transfer. I only plan on staying for two years and then transferring out and want to go to Cal. I'm scared that it makes me look less competitive compared to others and maybe shows that I am not able to handle a harder course load. Any advice?

Admissions doesn’t care about how many classes you take per term, only that you took the right classes (e.g. IGETC) and have enough units -- doesn’t matter if you take 1 year or 5.

Hi, I’m trying to transfer to UCLA after one year at a community college. My major is psychology and I have all of the major pre-reqs done since Fall 2018. My GPA is a 4.0. I have been accepted to UCSB, and UCI with regents so far. However, I did not get the regents invitational email for UCLA that they sent out to some students. Should I be worried that I did not get the invitational email? My other friends who also have 4.0 gpa’s got the email. Thank you.

4.0 isn’t a guarantor of Regents Scholarship acceptance or invitation at any campus, although it is an informal requisite. It bears emphasis that since this is a scholarship meant to highlight the most talented and promising students, they are looking for students who have demonstrated potential that goes beyond the academic. This could be notable involvement in extracurricular activities, some aspect of your personal background, a talent or trait you possess, or something else that we can’t be sure of.

Getting a Regents Scholarship from one campus is already a tremendous achievement. Congratulations!

If I got an email about Regents to UC Davis, does that mean I got Regents to other UCs?

Each campus makes decisions on the Regents scholarship independently (and a few campuses do not even offer Regents to transfers). So, no. It’s also a popular misconception that an applicant can only receive a Regents scholarship from one campus; this is just very uncommon given the odds of receiving it from any one school.

Hi! My current gpa is a 2.8 but my uc transferable gpa is a 3.3. The 3.3 is without trig and introductory chem 110 before chem 101. When tag says gpa of 3.2, do I qualify? My overall gpa is lower than the required gpa, unless they are talking about my uc transferable.

Evaluation for the TAG includes all UC-transferable coursework, not overall GPA. That means, roughly, any class you’ve taken for any subject has a rough-to-exact corresponding course at the UC campus. Most classes you take will be UC transferable. Your CC’s registrar will typically denote if a specific class is transferable or not. If it is, it counts toward the GPA considered on both the TAG and the UC application.

I am planning to transfer to UCD/UCSD. I recently found out that I got a D in my biology class this winter quarter (one that is a pre-req for my major). I want to retake it but my school doesn't offer it during the summer and my spring schedule is packed with other major required classes already. I know I can't do an AR either. My grades have been near-perfect until this class. Do you think there is anything I can do from this point onward? I appreciate any help I can get.

Sorry to hear about that. Obviously retaking the class is your best bet. If you can’t do this, and there is some legitimate reason that you got the grade you did (e.g. mental health, personal or family emergency), you can add comments about the grade in the application. If this doesn’t seem like a possibility, consider taking an extra year -- you can just retake that one class (and perhaps one other course to meet unit minimums, maybe); there is no requirement that a student be enrolled in consecutive semesters, so it’s possible to not take classes the other semester.

I want to apply to UCLA and UC Berkeley. My GPA is higher than the average range that is posted on their respective transfer profiles. However, I am severely lacking in extracurricular activities and other "holistic" factors like work experience and leadership positions. My only leadership and work experience is from high school. Will this significantly affect my ability to transfer to these schools?

If high school wasn’t long ago for you, then it does not hurt to put down your high school activities on your application. In general, extracurricular activities are not as crucial for admission as they are for freshman applicants, but you should have at least something on there that reflects your interests and evidence of a social life beyond the classroom.

When asking for unit credits and subject completion from AP exams, can I just deal directly with UC admissions without discussing it with my community college counselor? In other words, part of my 60 units comes from AP Exams, but do I need to tell my community college counselor about it, or will UC admissions apply those units on their own based on what I put on my application?

The business of receiving course credit for APs is entirely done through your CC; you send official scores (I think, it has been a while) or documentation, the CC officially acknowledges it with a transcript notation; the UC looks at the transcript and takes note of any AP credits you have and factors that in accordingly.

I want to transfer to UCLA for math. I notice on their website, there’s a list of requirements for all math majors. Then there’s a list of additional requirements for specific math majors. Some of these majors have an asterisk saying “Students are classified as pre-majors until they complete the preparation courses at UCLA.” Does this mean that I can complete these additional requirements at UCLA instead of CCC?

“Pre-major” is a unique UCLA identifier that denotes that: a) a major is impacted -- admission to the major is competitive and b) some courses must be completed (and a certain grade received, usually a B or higher) before one can even submit their application for the major. Sometimes these classes need to be taken at UCLA; other times, they don’t. (Course selection at your CC, as well as the rarity/specificity of the course requirement, are two key factors). Check ASSIST’s transfer agreement between your CC and UCLA to see if you can take the class at your institution or if you need to take it post-transfer. If the class isn’t offered at your CC and you need to take it after transferring, that’s fine and not taking it won’t hurt your transfer admissions chances
