January and February are a great time to do dormant spraying and winter pruning on many deciduous (I.e. leafless) trees, especially fruit trees! “But what do I spray and prune, and when? And how?!” It’s best to seek out variety-specific and regionally appropriate information. You don’t prune a grape vine the same way you would a peach tree. We are always happy to help guide you, using our favorite resources. Look for books and ebooks by Sunset Publishing (including used copies) and University of California. There is also a wealth of information online. Try including “UC” in your variety-specific searches for University of California resources. For example, try “UC + Peach tree spraying” or “UC + pruning Japanese maple”, etc. and you are bound to get trusted university-guided information, including short, printable handouts you can take with you to the nursery. Many of these handouts are geared toward home gardeners! Try some searches where you include the word “Sacramento” as well, since not all UC information is geared toward the Central Valley. “UC + Sacramento” will likely take you to UCCE (University of California Cooperative Extension) Master Gardeners of Sacramento, which is one of the best resources for a Sacramento gardener.
