RASL Full Colour HC Review
RASL By Jeff Smith 472 pages FULL COLOUR Hardcover Last October I had a little birthday money to burn so I grabbed the kids and went down to the not-so-local comic book shop and ended up buying Jeff Smith's RASL. I had seen a preview of RASL in the "Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond" book and although I thought it was interesting, it never really grabbed me. Much later, RASL #1 was made available for free on Comixology and again, I thought it was interesting but it just didn't grab me the way Bone did when I first saw it back in the day. Perhaps I wondered where exactly a long storyline about an inter-dimensional art thief could go. But like I said, I had money to burn, two children making shopping very difficult and a gorgeous hardcover of RASL staring me in the face. Based upon the quality of Jeff Smith's previous work, I gave it a chance. Boy, was that a great decision. Not only was it in colour (I had assumed it was B&W) but it was printed to look like it was on old pulpy newsprint paper, you know, like comics used to be printed on. The only thing missing was that awesome comic "smell". After the first issue, RASL started diverging from the "inter-dimensional art thief" premise and the greater story started to take shape. That's where RASL truly shone for me. Background story elements involving Nicola Tesla, the Philadelphia Experiment, and the nature of the dimensional-hopping itself (Are the other dimensions real, or are they created by going to them? And if so, are the people in that dimension real as we know it? Why does RASL never meet himself when travelling between dimensions?) This all created a wonderful backdrop to the adult and complex characters layered on top, especially RASL himself, whom is not the most likeable hero but he is a hero in the film noir sense of the word. Not all the answers to the questions the book raises are answered, in fact I'm not sure any are. But that's part of the wonder of the book, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, it's up to you to decide the answers for yourself. Smith's art and layouts are always great and I would even say that RASL is a slight notch above his work on BONE. His cartoony style compliments the much more adult storyline and characters more than you might think possible. Never once do you feel that you are not in the hands of a master, pacing out the story exactly as he wants you to experience it. The colouring of this hardcover volume is absolutely gorgeous and never overwhelms Smith's original black and white artwork. Simply a beautiful book that took far too little time to read! It sucks you in and you don't want to come back to your own dimension until the last page. RASL is a science fiction noir with enough twists, turns and Tesla coils to keep any comic fan entertained. Highly reccomended.
