You’ve been trying your hardest to be more assertive.

Well, maybe assertive is the wrong word. Less of a doormat?

… That’s not great either.

You’ve been trying to stand up for yourself more.

You have a habit of letting things go, bottling your emotions, and letting people cross boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. Or, you know, just letting people get away with rude things in general.

Like right now. With the person that just blatantly cut in front of you in the long line to get drinks at your favorite coffee shop.

Usually, it’s “oh whatever, people can be rude, but I’d rather just avoid confrontation”, but you know that’s not gonna fly right now.

See, you’re with your datemate, Boss… and he’s been helping you learn how to stand up for yourself. He’s very assertive himself and takes no shit from anyone, he amazes you each time. He’s so confident and quick thinking and sarcastic and protective and charming and kind once you get to know him and-

“Ahem.” Boss gets your attention, you turn and look up at him from where you stood beside him. He nods towards the person in front of you and gives you an expectant look.

Oh.

Yeah.

You guess he’s not gonna take over for this one. A learning opportunity for you, huh?

Oh stars.

You look down at the ground. You don’t want to do this…

Really it’s no big deal, it’s just cutting in line. It’s not like they did a hit and run when you were in your parked car and sped off before you could even blink.

Not that, that has happened to you or anything.

See?! Cutting in line is not even that serious. You’ve had a lot worse happen to you! Sometimes it’s better to just avoid confrontation altogether, and let things go.

A stern, but gentle nudge from beside you derails that train of thought.

You sigh. Boss is right. If you let people take advantage of your shy nature, you can end up with people crossing major boundaries and not knowing how to get out of the situation before something bad happens.

You’ve heard that lecture a lot.

At least Boss is here with you now and you have his support. If it escalated, he would never let anything happen to you. Yeah okay! You can do this! You start before you lose your newfound confidence.

“H-hey!” You call out as you look up from the ground and at the back of the person’s head. Yikes. Coming right out of the gate with stuttering. Reaaaal smooth.

The person turns around, giving you a bored look.

“What?” They snap.

Oh sweet shit, they’re already mad-

“You cut in front of me.”

“So?”

“… So we’ve been waiting in line for twenty minutes waiting to place our order and you just cut in front of us… that i-isn’t fair.” You lose your momentum towards the end, looking down at the ground again.

The person scoffs

“Life isn’t fair- wait did you say us?” The person asks while looking nervous, and you nod.

“He’s with you?” You look back up at them to see them pointing at Boss. You nod again, leaving the person to look like they’re about to piss their pants.

You don’t like that.

Them, pointing at Boss. Like he’s some sort of thing to be gawked at.

“You can stop staring and pointing now. Didn’t your parents ever tell you that’s rude?” You blurt out in anger, surprising yourself with your tone. But, you hold your ground.

The person just glances at you before taking their leave and going to the back of the line.

“Fucking bitch.” You mutter, which causes Boss to start laughing.

Like really laughing.

You could hear those little “nyeh heh heh”’s breaking through. Stars, you love it when you get to hear those. Your anger is forgotten as you look up at him happily.

“I did it!” You say excitedly when he calms down enough to look you in the eyes.

He smiles down at you, cupping your cheek.

“Yes you did darling, I’m proud of you.” He tells you, and you can’t help but grin.
