UFC 177 Recap: Carlos Diego Ferreira continues his ascent up UFC ladder
A pair of Texans did battle at UFC 177 this past weekend in Sacramento.
First up, South Texas representative Carlos Diego Ferreira continued his run up the rankings with an exciting victory over former TUF finalist Ramsey Nijem. It was an exciting affair for the school owner from Pharr as he and Nijem got after it straight from the opening bell.
In a back and forth opening round, both fighters took turns being the aggressor. Carlos Diego opened aggressively with strikes but Ramsey followed up with a few takedowns off kicks and a few nice strikes of his own. Nijem landed a nice left hook as well but Ferreira took it. On the ground Ramsey did not really want to spend much time in CDF’s guard, electing to stand up or not following him down at all for the most part. Late in the first Ferreira scored a nice transition with a kimura sweep followed by an armbar attempt but couldn’t finish to conclude was a close round.
Ferreira opened up the second round with a nice right hand, prompting Nijem to shoot for a takedown. CDF countered with an arm-in guillotine attempt but quickly let it go. As they stood Carlos Diego clocks Nijem with a perfectly placed right hand counter that dropped him to the floor. From there it took a few unanswered punches but the ref eventually stepped in to call a halt to the bout via TKO at the 1:53 mark of round 2.
“I fought really hard and got a win over a really tough guy, so I’m very excited right now,” said Ferreira in his post-fight interview. “Being undefeated doesn’t mean as much anymore. I’m one of the best in the world, and it’s exciting to just be fighting here. … I felt tired, so I knew I needed to try something different and then I got the knockout.”
With this finish Carlos Diego Ferreira now moves to 2-0 in the UFC and 11-0 overall. He also achieved his second straight ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus netting him an extra $50,000 pay day along with a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle.
And so the ball keeps rolling for the Manaus native and he’s certainly no secret anymore. Expect CDF to face a fringe top 10 contender in his next bout as he continues his ascent up the UFC ladder.
UFC 177 Recap: Damon Jackson suffers misstep in short notice UFC debut
As the second Texan on the card, UFC debut fighter Damon Jackson fell victim to a “submission of the night” in his first UFC fight against Yancy Medeiros.
The outgoing Legacy FC featherweight champion took the PPV bout on a nine day notice replacing Justin Edwards and was eager to step into the cage come fight time. He was quick to close the distance and quickly worked to establish himself in the clinch, a place where “Leech” has historically been strong. His opponent, who has fought as high as middleweight, was well equipped however and finished the round strong with crisp strikes and a choke attempt.
Undeterred, Damon kept moving forward in the second round but it was more of the same with Medeiros controlling the action in between a few shots landed by Jackson. Halfway through the bout Yancy attempted a guillotine which Damon tried to spin out of. Unfortunately for him he ended up in an even worse spot with the choke reversed as it was perfectly noosed around his neck. Jackson did not tap but fell unconscious from the modified bulldog choke, forcing the ref stoppage at the 1:54 mark of round two.
Damon Jackson drops to 9-1 following the bout, suffering his first loss as a pro. He’ll be on the lookout for retribution in his bout so stay tuned for that announcement within the next few months.
Best of the rest – Complete UFC 177 results
As for the rest of UFC 177 card, it was highlighted by TJ Dillashaw defending his bantamweight title for the very first time against surprise challenger Joe Soto. Dillashaw was slated to face former champ Renan Barao in a rematch of their last bout before weight cutting issues forced the Brazilian off the card. With limited options available Soto got the shot to step straight into a title shot in his UFC debut. For his part the former Bellator tournament champion performed admirably making it to the fifth and final round but fell victim to a knockout with TJ hitting him with a head kick before finishing things from there in the fifth and final stanza.
Former TUF winner Tony Ferguson squeaked by Danny Castillo in the co-main event by split decision while women’s bantamweight contender Bethe Correia scored her second win over one of the “Four Horsemen” to round out the main card. Bethe beat Shayna Baszler by second round TKO. Now with wins over both Baszler and Jessamyn Duke and with Marina Shafir still toiling in the amateurs, the only target left on Correia’s mind is top female fighter in the world Ronda Rousey. Granted the “Rowdy” one equally wants a fight with the Brazilian but Bethe will have to get in line behind a few other contenders before she gets her shot at UFC gold.
