UFOS OVER LEVELLAND, TEXAS IN 1957 - On the late evening of November 2, 1957 - beginning at around 10 p.m. and lasting for approximately three hours - multiple credible witnesses (a dozen or more) claimed to have encountered several strange "luminous objects" along the dark, rural roads around the small West-Texas town of Levelland. A number of the reported witnesses were local police officers who were responding to the flurry of phoned-in reports. The varied "glowing, egg-shaped and rocket-like" objects, reportedly, caused some of the witnesses' vehicles - in proximity- to temporarily "stall" or "shut off" due to some possible unknown "electrical interference" related to the UFOs. Several objects were reported to have actually have landed in the middle of the nighttime country roads, or on some farmer's field, before flying away into the sky. This mass-sighting "mini-flap" around Levelland was soon taken notice by the popular media of the times (newspapers and radio) and Air Force Investigators with Project Blue Book. No explanation fully accounted for all of these events - but the mundane theory of "natural ball lightning phenomena" was proffered by skeptical investigators and Blue Book. "The Levelland Encounters" - a classic case in UFO History - is probably the best representative example (or even the influential template) for the "auto interference" attribute in close encounter classification and nomenclature. Sixty years later, questions still remain in this series of still-unknown encounters.
