Two multi-stall bathrooms will soon be designated as gender-neutral at the University of the Fraser Valley’s Abbotsford campus.

A motion was unanimously passed at a recent Student Union Society (SUS) board meeting that will see two bathrooms changed over the summer on the student union building’s second floor.

SUS president Sukhi Brar said the motion came after student groups requested such a change last summer. Since then, Brar said the society has discussed the idea in a number of committees and has looked at other universities, such as McGill in Montreal and the University of Victoria, where they have already established gender-neutral bathrooms.

Time for Abbotsford to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

So, to recap, the folks at the UFV Student Union Society (UFVSUS): - attempted to CONFISCATE a rainbow flag hung by queer students for a short period of time in solidarity with the Orlando latinx lgbt+ community, - deleted comments on one of their posts (specifically, their brand new rainbow profile picture) criticizing the flags' removal, - blocked at least two queer students from commenting on their page, - and finally, CONGRATULATED THEMSELVES on their allyship. Meanwhile, the person who put up the flag has yet to be contacted (I asked). So in short, UFVSUS is the embodiment why I don't trust straight cis people who claim to be allies.

I'm pretty pissed off right now. The student union at my university (@UFVSUS on twitter) took down and attempted to confiscate(!!!) a rainbow flag that was hung up on an unobtrusive place by queer UFV students, and is deleting facebook comments calling them out on it. This is just the latest in a long line of heterosexist aggressions (both micro- and otherwise) toward the Pride Collective at UFV in particular & LGBTQIAP+ students in general.
