Moonbin + 11. An Accident
You were running late which was surprisinglynot the first thing that had gone wrong that morning—and it certainly wouldn’tbe the last.
The first thing that had gone wrong was youfalling out of bed after a nightmare. You couldn’t remember it precisely butyou remembered your terror at being caught by an invisible monster. You’d triedto squirm out of its grasp and ended up in a tangle of sheets on your floor, your arms aching from catching your fall.
Then when you’d finally collected yourself longenough to check your phone you saw that your alarm had long since gone off. Youwould be late to your class, if you made it at all.
Thankfully, of all the terrible things that hadhappened that morning, losing your bike wasn’t one of them. You darted out ofyour apartment and grabbed your bag, trotting downstairs as fast as you couldwithout tripping over yourself.
You were normally timid riding your bike in thecity. Traffic had made you that way. It wasn’t so much that you didn’t trustdrivers to be in control, it was more that you didn’t trust yourself to stay incontrol.
But you were desperate and running late so youpedaled as hard as you could and prayed whatever you crashed into was soft andnot easily breakable.
It was a practical joke. Had to be. From theuniverse straight to you.
Because as soon as you began your relentlesshurry a boy walked out from a side street and you weren’t going slowly enoughto stop yourself so you swerved out at the truck parked by the sidewalk anddove off your bike.
You landed on the boy and when you realized yourknee was in his chest you climbed off, your face already red. “I’m so sorry!”You clambered back up to standing and held out a hand to him.
He shook off your help with a pained smile andstood up. “It’s okay.”
“No, I’m just. I was running late and I wasbeing reckless. And,” you checked your watch where you could see there was onlytwenty minutes left of the hour long class, “there’s no point in even trying tomake it anymore. Can I buy you coffee or something?” You wrung your hands, desperate to make up for nearly killing the poor boy.
He shook his head, his smile easing. “It’sokay. I have to get to practice.”
You nodded, biting your lip. “Are you sure? Ifeel so bad.”
He rubbed the back of his neck in thought. “Tomorrowthen? We can meet here.” He held out a hand. “I’m Moon Bin, by the way.”
You took his hand and introduced yourself.Something told you he wouldn’t have agreed if he hadn’t thought you were cuteor interesting or trustworthy or at least worth spending time with and thethought buoyed you. Of all the things that had gone wrong, at least this hadgone right.
