There are some really great features packed into this website! I love how the utility bar at the top gives users control over the look and feel. As a creative professional, you are always taught to push the limits and come up with innovative solutions. This is certainly sound advice and applies to many many aspects of design. However, when you are dealing with user interface (UI) controls (i.e buttons, forms, navigation, etc), it is actually more effective not to be creative. Yup, you heard me. Do not be creative. 

There are two big mistakes when it comes to controls:

1. Not using the right controls. For example, if you have a simple yes or no response, there is no need to have a drop down menu with these options. Why make the user go through the step of having to click to disclose the options? A better use of controls would be a radio button with both options listed right within the screen. Same goes for a text field instead of say a radio button when the answer is very straightforward and can be picked from a few options. It will be way easier to verify your data if you aren't accounting for that one person that typed the number 2 and the other that typed the letters T-W-O. 

2. Customizing or redesigning basic UI widgets. This includes command links, buttons, radio buttons, check boxes, scroll bars and close boxes. It is way more effective not to reinvent the wheel. I know, you want to be creative. Let's face it though: some of the best interaction designers have spent decades refining these controls and done many, many, many hours of user testing. Also users are comfortable with the standards. They will automatically associate your site as being difficult or confusing if there aren't the basic aspects that they recognize from other websites and apps.

There is a reason that navigation bars tend to be horizontal in the top right or vertical on the left of websites, buttons tend to have a circular-rectangle shape, and radio buttons are associated with a single choice. Users know that the three line symbol found on apps tends to take them to a navigation menu. If you decide to create three squiggly lines in your app, does this mean the same thing? Will this also take the users to the navigation menu or is it a completely different control? The better questions is, why do you want to waste the users brainpower on figuring out something simple that could easily be represented by the industry-standard and norm. It is a MUCH better use of their time to try to understand how your system will help them achieve their goals. 

I never want to discourage designers from being creative. But here is just not the place to flex those creative muscles. Save that for the actual content and visual design of your website or app.
